TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS.

GERALDINE. Tho monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Couneil was held yesterday. Present: Cra. K. Mackenzie (chairman), F. E. Flatman. ■T. Lyon, J. C. South, A. Bain, E. Erodie, C. Ley, and J. M. H. Tripp. The chairman referrod .to tho death which had occurred during the month, of Mr H. M. McLeod, who had sat for a number of years on tho Council as a member of the Temuka Eiding, and had gained the respect and esteem of all oia fellow members. The Council extended its sympathy to Mrs McLeod and her family. The Council also recorded its sympathy with the widow and family of Mr E. E. Guinness. The chairman welcomed Cr. J. IL Tripp back to a seat on the Council, as representative of tho Mount Peel Riding. The chairman reported that regarding unemployment the Council had 42 men at work at Orari Gorge, making a' road, and there was another road which might be done near Blair Bros.'s old run. Cr. Flatman (chairman of the Finance Committee) reported that receipts for the month had amounted to £777 18s 7d. There was a credit balance of £1442 4s. That day's payments amounted to £2033 9s 7d, which would leave a debit balance of £SBO 15s 7d. Expenditure in the ridings to date was as follows! Temuka £I3OB Ids Bd, ~Geraldiue £1125 10s, Mount Peel £142 14s 2d. The report was adopted. Mr F. Gaby (Geraldine) reported that he had impounded 32 cattle and six horses during the month. Mr J. K. Bradshaw (Tomuka) reported having impounded 113 cows and nine horses. The South Canterbury Power Board notified the Council of the resignation of Mr K. Mackenzie, its representative on the Board, and asked that another appointment be made. Mr B. E. Mac Donald was appointed. A general rate was struck for the current year as follows: Temuka Eiding Id in the £, Geraldme Eiding 1 l-8d in tho £, Mount Peel Jd in the £. Tho Public Trustee wrote enclosing a statement of the administration of tho Hobson's Trust Account for the period ending May 31st, 1930 It was resolved'that £250 bo paid to the Eangitata Island Hall Committee, provided the Trustee agrees; if not, £-00 to bo paid now, and £SO in January next. The County Engineer (Mr C. E. Bremnor) reported in detail on work done throughout the County during tho month. Tho Council then sat as a Eivor Board, the same members being present. The Minister for Public Works wrote that favourable consideration would be given to a £2 for £1 subsidy for tho Orari river flood control work, estimated to cost £450. The Temtika Town Clerk (Miss Meek) wrote drawing the Conn oil's attention to the way the riv ® r^ as washing in at the end of Cass atjreet, and suggesting that some protective work be done at this point. It was decided that if Mr Hancox will cut willows and put them in position, the Board will auction them. Nino ratepayers of Clandeboye asked for about eight chains of light baking in Mr Mackie's property at the river flowed round the existing bank in flood-time, and then over their properties.— Engineer to report.

CLANDEBOYE. The annual ball of the bachelors and spinsters of the Clandeboye district was held in the local hall, when a very large number were present, including visitors from all the aurrounding'Us-. trict The hall had been beautifully cSatediover 100 couples took part in the Snd march. The music was supnlied by Sinclair's Orchestra, extras being played by Miss I. Hooper and Mr C. Kelland. The lucky spot one-step S™'»" won by Mias F. Symo. Mr J. O'Neill. Mr S. Parkes was M.C.

CANCER CAMPAIGN. Donations to the South Canterbury Cancer Campaign Fund now total £1663 9s lid. Personal. Dr. A. Kidd, of the Waipiata Sanatorium, is at present stopping at the Grosvenor Hotel. Dr. C. Stanley Fraser has returned from Christchurch. Mr C. L. Orbell has been appointed a member of the Board of Trustees of tho Timaru racecourse to fill tho vacancy created by the death of Mr E. E. Guinness. Messrs J. E. Macassey, 11. McDougall, Les. Murray, and H. Moller (Dunedin), and D. Stronach (Central Otago) are visitors to Timaru. Lectures to Farmers. Owing to illness, Mr J. W. Hadfield, agronomist at the Plant Eesearch Station, Palmerston North, will be unable to come south to deliver his lecture on "Crop Certification," to the members of the South Canterbury Farmers' Union and the Timaru A. and P. Association, as arranged for Friday afternoon next. Mr Hadfield's plaee will be taken by Mr C. C. Leitch, instructor in agriculture, Christchurch, who will speak on the same subject, and will use the lantern slides prepared by Mr Hadfield. Mr E. McGillivray, Fields Superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, Christchurch, will speak on Pasture Improvement." This lecture will also be illustrated by lantern slides. Maori Park Viaduct. Since the pile-drivers were at work on the railway viaduct at the northern end of Caroline Bay, a considerable time ago, nothing further ha 3 been done iu connexion with the completion of the road from Caroline Bay to Maori Park, and there has been some comment as to the reason the work was not gone on with. At a meeting of tho Timaru Borough Council last night the Mayor (Mr W. Angland) expressed satisfaction that the Government had given the Council the land required for making the road from Caroline Bay under the railway to Maori Park. The borough engineer expected to start on this work to-morrow. Borough Council. Tho ordinary meeting of tho Timaru Borough Council was neld last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr W. Angland), Councillors J. Todd, A. Kennedy, M. H. Eichards, F. Chittock, W. H. Hunt, J. E. Hart, and F. B. Hawkey. Eeferring to the proposed Waimataitai drainage unemployment loan, 1930, the Mayor said he was very pleased to announce that he had just received a telegram from the Minister for Public Works, not only giving permission to carry out the work, but also granting Government subsidies. This was very satisfactory, and would save the ratepayers £6OOO, which would have had to be expended had subsidies not been granted. The telegram from tho Minister read: "In reply to your telegram the District Engineer'reports that the Borough Council's revised estimate for cutting ft canal and straightening Waimataitai creek is £11,589, inclusive of labpur. Two pounds for one pound on estimated laboiir expenditure would apiount to £4700, and the Government is prepared to contribute two pounds for one on labour up to £4700, on condition that the work is commenced at the earliest possible date, and that the Council will provide work for Timaru unemployed during tho next six months, the Government not to be cal ed upon to provide work for residents of Timaru between now and December 31st next." The Council decided to float, a loan of £7OOO by the sale of debentures to the public. The Mayor then referred to the recent conference of delegates representing the various local bodies in Highways District No. 17, ,to consider the suggestions made by the town clerk (Mr E. A. Kiliick) for a simpler method of allocating heavy traffic fees. Mr Angland said he was pleased to report that the conference had agreed to the proposals, which would meln a great saving of work and administration costs, not only to the officials of the local bodies concerned, but to a great many of the ratepayers, who in the past had had to keep tallies and submit periodical mileage returns. The omnibus service account showed a credit balance of £1692 10s 4d. The town clerk was instructed to advise the Town Planning Board that the Timaru Borough Council agreed with the proposed regional zone. On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided to widen the junction of Softon and Le Cren streets. WINCHESTER. In the Geraldine Hockey Sub-Asso-ciation's competition, the Temuka Ladies' Hockey Club visited Winchester on Thursday afternoon and wero defeated by two goals (scored by Misses E. Townley and J. Aker) to nil. Mr F Smith and Mr W. E. Cook were I'fifcl*oos• Miss Eileen Cotter, of Christchurch, is on an extended visit to Winchester, where she is the guest of her sister, Mrs T. Harrison. Mr 0. W. Lawson, stationmaster, Winchester, has received notice of his promotion to Timaru. ORARL At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Orari Women's Institute, there vffrf- present: Mesdames G. A. M. Ma te laid (in the chair), J. B. Roberts, ,V. Hughes, H. A. Brenton, 1 (1 . W. Grayburn, W. E. Cook, Misses F Grimsey, R. Killoh, C. McQueen, and J. De Latour. Correspondence was received from Mr C. J. Cossens, poultry instructor, Department of Agriculture, Christchurch, and it was arranged to have his address on "poultry culture'' at the next meeting on July 17th. It was also decided that mombers should take part in a Swedish dance at this meeting. A programme for tho following eight montns was drawn up. The January meeting will take the form of a garden party at the residence of Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald. Orari Estate. Word was received from Migs G. Ferguson, Christchuroh. that she will be visiting the district as the guest of the Orari Institute, and it was decided to hold a "country dance" in the Woodbury Hall on the occasion of this visit.

FAIRLIE. A very successful banquet and social were held in Aorangi Hall by the Fairlie Football Club to celebrate the marriage of Mr A. Forrester, a popular member of the club. sfr W. L. Bourn (president of the Fairlie Club) oresided. Mr Bourn presented Mr and Mrs Forrester with a case of cutlery, and expressed the best wishes of all. Mr Forrester thanked all for the very fins present and the kind sentiments jtfiicn had been expressed. Durm<r the evening songs were given hv the Rev. Father Outrim. and the Rev. J/ T. McWilliam, Miss Gibson being the accompanist. A very pleasant evening was spent.
