CORPORAL PUNISHMENT.

A SOUTHLAND RESOLUTION. (PBE3S ASaOCULTJO* T*LXOBMf.) INVERCABGILL, May 30. The Southland Education Board today passed the following resolution regarding the infliction of corporal punishment in schools: "That this Board takes a serious view of the misuse of corporal punishment and expects teachers to understand and observe the correct relationship of such form of punishment to the government of the school. The Board realises that corporal punishment may at times be necessary, but holds the view that if its practice is frequent this is in almost all cases a sign either that the teacher has the wrong kind of personality, or that his personality is not functioning as it should. For purposes of record, head and' sole teachers are required to have all cases of corporal punishment duly detailed in a book provided for the purpose. This register is to be considered as the school record. The : head teacher may delegate to, or withhold from,, his assistants authority to inflict corporal punishment, except that in no case shall such authority be given to a probationer."
