NORTH ISLAND TRIAL MATCH. AN INDIFFERENT DISPLAY. (MISS ASSOCIATIOM TIUtOKAM.) PALMERSTON NORTH, May 14. The seloctors of the New Zealand Rugby Union saw an indifferent garao in tho North Island Possibles v. Probables trial match. On paper tho teams appeared to bo fairly balanced, but the Possibles proved the much stronger fifteen, winning by the wide margin of 42 points to C. The play generally •was inclined to be ragged, with very few combined rearguard movements, although on occasions there were bright flashes of individual play. , . The Possibles backs were superior throughout, Cooke (Wairorapa) proving invaluable, and creating many openings. Heazlewood (Wellington) was easily the better of the two full-backs. Mackay (Wellington) and Lucas (Auckland) also gave good displays. Corner (Auckland) was very game behind the Possibles pack, and made the most oi his opportunities, but was outshone by Kilby (Wellington). Wl»,, W » Johnson (Wellington), and Kiiby were the best Probables backs. The young Hawlce's Bay centre, Ruru, was good only on occasions. There was a notable battle between the opposing wing-forwards, the veteran Porter (Wellington) and Solomon <Auckland). The latter was one of tb* outstanding players on the ground. _.„.._ The Probables' forwards got tne peawt share of the ball in the first half. Tfcj two packs, on the whole, were well matched. An injury to the veteran Watrarapa noooker, Irvine, noticeably affected the success of the Probables in this department. ._ gtalayaon (NortlP Auckland), Coulsten <WeOta*t<w>. McLean" Wellington), and Raid rapa) distinguished themselves in the roseibles forwards, and Knight (Auckland), Betty (Auckland), and Harvey (Wairarapa) for the Probables. , ...„v Nicholls (Wellington) and Minns (Auckland) were absentees from * h e .Probables team, and wero replaced by Stringfallow (Wairarapa) and Ball (Wellington) respecV Thn Possibles fielded the team selected, but in" tho second spell Strange (Manawhenua) replaced Elvy (Wellington), ; and Gerard (Bush) went on in place of Finlayson. A crowd in the vicinity of GOOO watched the game, and the weather and ground condltiona were ideal. The Probables had the sun and wind behind them in the first spell, in which Finlayson, Coulsten, Mackenzie, and Mackay scored for the Possibles, Heazlewood converting two and kicking a penalty goal. Puller made the only entry for the Probables with two penalties. In the second spell McKenzie, Strange, Gerard, McKay, and Cooke scored for the Possibles, Heazlewood adding the extra points on four occasions. _____ CANTERBURY UNION. THIS WEEK'S GAMES.
