HOT DAY IN MAY.
RECORD FOR FIFTEEN YEARS. Not for fifteen years has there been such a- hot day in, May in Cbrigtclrorch as yesterday, when the thermometer climbed to 74 degrees at 2.30 p.m. While autumn in this City is usually a mild, and pleasant time of the year, the weather that has been experienced lately is certainly exceptional. A light nor'-wester was blowing all day on Tuesday, when the temperature reached 68.7 degrees. At noon yesterday, the thennometer recorded 68.1 degrees, and the mercury climbed higher as the afternoon wore on. The nearest May, recording to yesterday's maximum wag on May Bth, 1922, when the temperature reachod 73 i gu_ ol >e point short of yesterday te reading, In 1915, however, the May maximum was 77.8, recorded.on the 11th. The rainfall for the first fortnight in May, also, is exceptionally light, only •07in being recorded. Last year it waß .19 for the same period, but lower recordings than that for the past fortnight were made in 1927, when .Ollin fell in the first fortnight in May, and in 1911 when the fall was .06in. • A The mean temporature for the past fortnight waß 47.6, while last year it was tor the same period.
