FOOTBALL.

RUGBY. .;* CANTERBURY UNION. TO-MORROW'S FIXTURES. It is ft long time nine* patrons have been provided with such an afternoon'* sport as that -which will be presented at Lancaster Perk to-morrow, when two aenior games will be played on the oral. As the match against the British' team is not far off, the selectors deem it advisable to pick players to go into training. To-morrow the form of those worthy of indnsion will be watched I ■very keenly. " . ' . . , ... At 1.30 Christchurch will tske the field against 'Varsity on the oval. This match was to have been played at the Show Grounds, but to aid the selectors it was shifted to Headquarters. In spite of their defeat last Saturday Christchurch are a strong combination and will eventually prove a very tough proposition ■ when ~the second round comes along. In Stewart, McGregor, Hart, and Scrimshaw, they have players of outstanding ability in line for All Black honours. The students are almost an unknown quantity, but nave a happy knack of bobbing np now and again and upsetting calculations. One or two new backs ' will be seen out in Blythe, a College Rifles player, and Macdonald, from Otsgo University. The pack should go well under the old rule, as-they have forwards of the hard, bustling type. Great Interest is being taken in the encounter between Albion and Linwood, which takes place at 8 o'clock. Albion have a fine pack, with one or two outstanding ' forwards. Howell, in particular, was' impressive last Saturday. Lilburne will oneej again be -the mainstay of the back division.: Linwood have sprung into prominence by reason of their decisive defeat of Chrislchurch last Saturday. They are a team in which there are no stars, but all are willing Workers. The change to the old rule will no doubt I benefit the Greens' "style of play, and other victories should come their way in the course of the season. On tho south ground, the improved Sydenham team meet Merivale. This should provido quite an even game. Oh the west ground, High School Old Boys are set down to meet Weat. In view of the curtain-raiser patrons are advised to attend the Park early. VENUE OF MATCHES CHANGED. The senior B grade match, Training College v. Christchurch, will be played on Show Grounds No. 1. The junior 1 grade match. Training College v. High School Old Boys, will be played on Show Grounds No. 3. The under 17 B grade match, Christchurch v. Sumner, will be played on Ho. 13 ground, .North Park. TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW. MERIVALE CLUB. Senior A v. Sydenham, at Lancaster Park South, 2.45 — H. Brosnan, A. Eowe, G. Rhodes, N. Dorreen, C. Harris, president of the Otago Rngbr Union, and manager of the Maori team which visited France and England in 1926-27, does not agree with the decision arrived nt by the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union in regard to what constitutes a mark. The Management Committee decided that "s> fair, catch can only bs allowed when the player claiming it has both feet on the ground and claims the catch by making a heol mark." Mr Harris says that when the Maoris were playing in England and a player jumped in the air, caught the ball, and make a mark with-his'heel immediately he landed on the ground, the mark was allowed. It seemed to him Hks splitting straws for the-Management Committee to rule as it had done. The rule on the point, he declared, made-the. position clear. ASSOCIATION. ENTRIES FOR CHATHAM CUP. Four teams have notified the Canterbury Football Association of their intention to enter for the Chatham Cup competition this year. They are:—New Brighton, Western, Thistle, and' Rangers. Entries closed yesterday, May Ist, with the secretary (Mr P. L. Lucas). In 1929 there were six Canterbury entries in s> total, of 29 teams. The Chatham Cup was - presented to the New Zealand. Football Association by the crew of H.M.S. Chatham when that ' ship was in the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. The rules for the competition cover, first inter-club matches, then interprovincial matches, and.finally, an .interIsland match to decide the winner. The final, which is usually played at Wellington, was won last year, by the Tramway's Club (Auckland), which defeated See. cliff (Dunedin). Thistle, the winner of the inter-club competition in Canterbury, was beaten by Seaeliff. in. the South Island interprovincial final. The cup'was'last held "in Canterbury by Sunnyside, which won it in 1926.
