RETIREMENT OF OFFICERS.

WELLINGTON, March 31. Several important retirements from the Public Service took effect as from to-day. The officers concerned were the following:— Mr J. B. Christie (solicitor, State Advances Department), 22J years' service. Mr T. B. Herd (Assistant Comptroller of Customs), 40 years' service. Colonel T. A. Hunter (Director, Division of Dental Hygiene), 10 years' ser« vice. '

Dr. J. S. Maclaurin (Dominion Analyst)., 29 years' service. Mr G. Hallidav (Land Purchase Officer), 40 years' service, Mr J. Portoous (Senior Inspector of Native Schools), 80 years' service. , Mr A. Crawford (Acting Senior Inspector of Schools, Wanganui), 31 years' service.

PRESENTATIONS.

[THE PBSSS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, March 81. ,The staff of the Customs Depart, ment presented Mr Herd with a binocular, a golf bag, and a stop watch as a token of their esteem, and also with a travelling doefc for Mrs Herd. Dr. McLaurin was presented by the officers of the Department of Scientific Beaearch with an oak desk for himself and a radio set for Mrs McLaurin.
