Switzerland, which has an area of only 15.950 square miles has now a population of roundly 4,000,000, to which it has risen from 3,300,000 in 1900. Small as the country is, it has 30 towns of over 10,000 people. While the population has increased the mountainous regions are being deserted. The general growth of Switzerland is the more remarkable foi the fact that one-fifth of the whole territory' is mountainous and unproductive.
