EAST LINWOOD AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION.

At the mooting of the East Linwood and Woolston Progressive Association last evening, over which Mr G. T. Baker presided, matters concerning tho Canal Reserve and drainage in tho district were discussed.^ A letter was received from Mr Sullivan, M.P., stating that the Minister for Public Works was the person most concerned in tho Association's endeavour to alter the control of tho ireservo, and that he would inform the Association of the date of the Minister's next visit to Christchurch as soon as it was available.

The secretary further reported that a competition had been held for the best suggestion for renaming the Canal Reserve, and that 'n the opinion of the adjudicators Miss Joan Peters was entitled to the prize for tfce name "Seaward road." Although the Association had since decided to approach the City Council and the Heathcote County Council In favour of changing the name to "New Commercial road," the name proposed by Miss Peters was good. Messrs G. W. Disney, E. H. Stringer, and H. B Kay were appointed members of a deputation to the City Council to put ward this question and also to ask that members of the Council should visit the district to view conditions generally. It was decided to compliment the Drainage Board on tho work already undertaken in the district, and at the same time to ask the Board to receive a deputation with reference to the outfall drain. Mr H. B. Kay pointed out that on Saturdays the gerater part of Linwood was taken tip with cricket matches, so that a very small area wa» left available for the general public, and suggested that something might be done in this matter. It was decided that the deputation which was already appointed to approach the City Council should draw attention to this also.
