The prizes will be presented by his Worship the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson). Life-saving. Taylor's Mistake will be crowded tomorrow, when two of the most important events of the year will be decided, the Black and White Cup and the Kesteven Cup. In all probability a surf-boat race, similar to that held at Waimairi last week, will be held, and it is hoped that several of the visiting airmen will be present. Telephone Service. The question of cheaper rates for telephone connexions is not being shelved, and at a recent well-attended meeting of the Sumner Business Men's Association, presided over by Mr J. H. Thomas, tlie question was again under review. As a result of tho Association's activities, users can hope for a better service in tho near future. Sumner Band. At their meeting held this week the Sumner Business Men's Association received a letter relative to the Sumner Band, which has been non-existent for some considerable time. It was shown that the public of Sumner had actually paid £215 towards the instruments, which would be lost in the event of their being seized by those holding a bailment over them. Tho Association was asked to guarantee the balance, or, if possible, to secure some guarantor in the meantime, and if possible to revive interest in the band. If this can bo done it is hoped to secure the instruments permanently. Bowling. Several club games have been played during the past week. Good progress is now being made with tho competitions, and in one event the final has been played. Tho results to date 1 are as follows: — Semi-final Rinks Championship (skips only mentioned): —E. A. Johnson beat J. 11. Thomas. The final is now between the winners of the foregoing match and a rink consisting of P. Vance, J. Martin, H. H. Barlow, and T. P. Chambers (skip), who have two lives, and thus have to be beaten twice.

In the sixth round of 'the championship singles, J. Martin beat J. F. Menzics.

In the third round of the handicap singles. T. F. Oh a mbers beat Dr. G. Gosset and H. J. Williams beat A. Edwards.

In the final of the championship pairs, P. Vance (skip) and H. H. Barlow beat J. H. Thomas (skip) and J. F. Menzies.

On Tuesday evening next the final of the rinks championship is to be played. On Wednesday two rinks from the Sumner Club visited Oxford and spent a very enjoyable day as the guests of the members of the Oxford Club.

Car Parking. The immense volume of traffic visiting the borough during the week-ends, und the complete disregard by many of the drivers for the observance of the parking regulations, have been the cause of muen comment during the recent fine week-ends. Lucky Escapes. Stretched taut across the roadway about waist-high from the ground, the wire rope used for hauling top the new lifeboat was difficult to see in the fading light of Tuesday evening. A young man on a motor-cycle, eager to see the new boat, drove up to the shed quite unaware of the factor which was to cause him a nasty fall. Suddenly he was hurled backwards 'by the wire catching him on the lower part of the chest, while his bicycle proceeded for a very short distance unattended. Fortunately, apart from abrasions, he seemed none the worse for his unenviable experience. The second incident occurred when two men, who had been standing at the door of the shed, suddenly moved inside. Immediately one of the heavilytimbered doors w'lieh had been "standing open crashed inwards on to the place. which they had .just vacated. Sumner Templars. Owing to the borough picnic there was no usual weekly meeting on Wednesday. Members are invited to bo present at Redcliffs on Tuesday next for the quoits challenge match. On Wednesday a welcome will be given to Bros. W. and D. Bromley, who have returned from Melbourne. A church parade will be held to-morrow at the Methodist Church at 11 a.m., when any parents desiring to attend be welcomed. Redcliffs Templars. The Ever Onward Temple held its regular meeting on Tuesday, when Sis. J. Darling, C.T., presided, and two new candidates were initiated. Sisters Joyce and Daphne Reed applied for clearance cards owing to leaving Redcliffs.
