EMPLOYEES BECOMING DESPERATE. .

A Chicago report states that the unpaid civic employees are' growing more desperate, as the rumour has been circulated that the Mayor, '"Big Bill" Thompson,, is leaving for IFlorida. Alderman Arvey stated: "The city employees- will not go much longer without cash. All they need is 9 leader to start serious trouble for the city administration." The city officials ire suddenly: becoming worried that their constituents,may desert them' at - the April primaries (elections) and have promised ■determined efforts to find a way out of the increasing predicament, but a superabundance of wordsj combined with;-a complete absence of action, has .char- | acterised the activities the majority of relief workers. , *. . , . Ml- Thompson, and the Strawn Group, which has been formed to get the- city out of its predicament; remain at -cross purposes. - . ."
The police have . continued to -round up the criminal element, Having arrested above.2soo suspects, some of whom would, according to Chitef-Detefc-tive Egan, "grace a penitentiary; HJster or a hangman's warrant." V
To-day's principal capture was-that of five chieftains of rthe ..notorious O'Donnell gang who were apprehended at a "directors' meeting." Mr Robert Eandolph, president of the Industry ? Association, •• in "racketeering," stated: "There is not an industry or" business in Chicago not paying tribute, some direct and some indirect. The public is paying in increased taxes, higher laundry and tailoring bills, higher rentals, and in scores of other ways." 1
