EVENING MEETING. • SOME FAST TIMES. La6t evening's amateur athletic meeting at Lancaster Park was remarkable for several outstanding performances. The weather was ideal, and the track in splendid order. Fields were large and in every race splendid finishes were recorded. The brightest spot of the meeting was the "find" which was made in a runner just come to Christchurch, L. G. Wooller, who has been at Sandhurst Military College in England for the past two years, where he competed for the Services in athletics. Woollor has joined up with the 'Varßity Club, ond ran tho quarter-mile for its team in the relay raco Ho returned the fine time of 52 4-ssoc for the distance, which was remarkably good considering the fact that Wooller has done little training since his arrival in New Zealand. M. D. Cooke, tho promising New Brighton boy, had his third successive win in the 880 yards handicap, returning lmin 56 l-ssec off 35 yards, being equivalent to a 2min 2sec run from scratch. Cooke ran a weltjudged race in excellent style. Honours in the sprints went to R. Cordery (0.A.A.C.). who in the 120 yards handicap ran a close second in his heat, off 21 yards, in 12sec dead. In the last 220 of the relay race he started 15 yards behind M. Leadbetter, and in spite of the fact that the latter did not bustle over the first part of the journey, Cordery's effort in gaining 12 yards on the ex-Dominion champion was i splendid effort. He ran with determination all the way, and finished with a brilliant turn of speed. Results were as follows: — 120 YDS OPEN HANDICAP. First Heat—G. Hart (Byds) 1, R. Carmichael (12iyds) 2, A. B. Clark (4Jyds) 3. rime, 12 l-ssec. Second Heat—F. T. McKenzie (13yds) 1, R. Cordery (2Jyds) 2, C. V. Atyeo (7yds) 3. Time, 12sec. Third Heat—E. R. Simpson (13yds) 1, J. A. Gasson (7Jyds) 2, H. O. Williams (lOJyds) 3. Time, 12 l-ssoc. Fourth Heat—L. G. Wooller (7yds) 1, K. Edmonds (7iyds) 2, R. 'Ross (131 yds) 8. Time, 12 l-ssec. Final. McKenzie (Technical) .. 1 Simpson ('Varsity) .. ..2 Hart (C.A.A.0.) .. ... S Time, 12sec. A very close race and s fine finish, McKenzie coming up fast over the last part. McKenzie (Byds) 1 Miss L. Alexander (9yds) .. 2 Miss M. Nelligon (BJyds) .. ;; Time, 14 l-ssec. Won by a yard, inches between second and third. 120 YDS HURDLES HANDICAP. 3. D. Henderson (Technical), scr 1 M. H. Mullaney (Marist), scr 2 Time, 17 2-ssec. The only competitors, Henderson winning by two yards. INTER-CLUB RELAY (880 yds, 440 yds, 220 yds, 220 yds). A Grade. 'Varsity (O. C. Harle.v, L. G. Wooller, R. O. F. King, M. Leadbetter) 1 C.A.A.O. A . . . . . . 2 Technical .. . . 3 Time, 3mln 44 l-ssec. An exciting race, rlarley and N. J. Suckling (C.A.A.C.) havng a great contest over the half-mile, which he 'Varsity man finished with a lead of four rards. Wooller took the baton, and with i fast burst got a break of 15yds on A. [i. Tideman (C.A.A.0.), who could gain lothing. Over the last furlong Leadbetter ed by 15yds from R. Cordery, but the latter, iy a brilliant run, cut down the lead to :hree yards before Leadbetter crossed the inishing line. B Grade. Sumner (C. 8. Ell, D. W. Bishop, G. W. Murray, C. T. Allen) 1 Marist ... - • . . 2 Sydenham .. .. 3 Time, 3min 50 4-ssec. Sumner won very lasily, after an interesting race over the Irst part. Bishop got a big lead in the inarter. which the sprinters increased.
