WORK AT SEWAGE FARM.
NEW PADDOCKS FORMED
A. big work in connexion with the Chriatchureh Drainage Board's sewage farm, the levelling of a considerable aiea of sand dunes for paddocks, «>■ completed recently. The area levelled is 53j acres, and increases the total area in paddocks to about 220 acres out of the. ">OO acres comprising the farm at Bromley. Th« contract for the area just complete.! «-.is signed in 1021!, but active operations did not start till April, IJ>27. The contract was let. at £2."»,.'<40. A portion of the operations was reclamation work, sand being removed from the area to a depression on the other side of l'»'mer's road.
Several other works have been completed at the farm. The septic tanks have been improved by providing additional .outlet "and inlet opening*, the result of which is that there is now n parallel flow across the tanks. The portion of the outfall race from the rising main which ran inclined through the sand has been replaced by a concrete race on a new and shorter route. Tinspoil from the excavation for the new septic tank was used to fill in a hollow in this area. An important improvement has been the construction of the main discharge carrier on a new line. The previous one discharged into the estuarv at a point almost oppositePleasant Toint. The new one discharges three-quarters of a mile further down at. a point where the estuary is much less confined.
