As a farewell to its honorary accom- | panist, Mr A. Johnston, the Kaiapoi j Male Choir held a very enjoyable smoke j concert on Mouda? evening. The president. Mr J. If. Kiackwell, presided over a full ntti ndanee of members. After the loyal toast, the choir sang the partsong, "Kill Every Glass." The toast of the guest of the evening was proposed by the honorary conductor, Mr iG. E. March, who congratulated Mr Johnston on his attaining a position with the Westland Timber Millers' Association, Grcymouth. He referred to the assistance rendered by Mr Johnston to the choir as honorary accompanist ' during the past six years, during which he had done his duty admirably. Not only was he an accomplished pianist, but he was a genial pal, always willing to do his best in the interests of the choir and the town generally. It was to be regretted that the town was losing such an able musician. A letter was read from Mr Chas. Clarkson, of Waiuiate, a past conductor of the choir, expressing regret at Mr Johnston's departure from Kaiapoi. The president then, on behalf of the choir, presented the guest w irh a monogrammed Kaiapoi rug, as a token of appreciation and esteem. Mr Johnston suitably acknowledged the gift, and expressed his regret at leaving the choir and other musical associations in the. town. The Mayor (the Rev. \V. If. A. Vickcry, prop'o.-i.-d the tocst of "The Choir," winch was responded to by Messrs S. Morgan, T. Batie, and J. Mcintosh. During 'the evening items were given by Messrs A. Baker, A. Hirst, J. Mcintosh, and G. E. March.
Miss M. Bradley, employed in the weaving flat at the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, received severe injuries to the head yesterday morning through he.ing struck with a falling beam. Bhe received medical attention and was conveyed to her home.
SEFTON. On Saturday last the new Presbyterian ma 11 :<e for the Sc£ton charge waa dedicated. There was a large attendance from all parts of the district and from the sister churches of the township. The service was conducted by tbe Rev. W. K. Hutchinson, of liangiora, the Moderator of the charge. Mr J. D. Wyllie, the chairman of the local Building Committee, detailed the steps leading up to the- erection of the building. The section was purchased some years since when it was derided to have the mause in Heftou township, but no move to build was niado until the sale of the old mans l for £725 in January last. The contract for the new building was let to Messrs Shankland and Taylor, of Rangiora, for £.095, and the committee were well pleased with the manner in which they had carried out their contract. The Moderator then asked Mr T. Wyllie, of liangiora, to whose generosity the Sefton charge was much indebted, to open tbe building with the gold key presented by the contractors. Speeches of congratulation were made by the B«v. J. Millar, the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery, and the Kcv. G. K. Ait ken, the former Moderator of the charge. Other visitors were the Bev. J. A. Allen, of Kiccarton, the Kcv. N. J. Raven, of Scargill, the Bev. D. Simmonds, of Cust, and Mr E. W. Rule, manager of the Boys' Orphanage. After an inspection of the house the company was entertained to afternoon tea by the ladies of the Sefton congregation. The new manse occupies the section adjoining the schoolmaster's house on the main road. The house is of wood on concrete foundations, with concrete paths, and consists of seven rooms with all conveniences, including electric light and electric pump, together with garage. The section has been fenced and the total cost amounts to about £ll7O. Of this amount over £IOOO is in hand.
Fernside played tho Sefton cricket team on its own ground on Saturday, defeating the home team by 87 runs to 36 on the first innings. Going in a second time Fernside made 77 for one wicket, and declared. Sefton made 05 for seven wickets during thes available time. For the visitors, G. Milne scored 25 and 40, his brdther accounting for 34 in the second innings. Minehington and G. Milne captured five wickets each. For Sefton, L. Morris scored 11 in the first innings, and C. D. Petrie 45 and C. Armstrong '-9 in the second innings.
WOODEND. Bro. T. Gibbs. 1.P.X.G., presided at the half-yearly meeting of the Woodend Lodce of Oddfellows, when the following officers were installed: N.G., Bro. M. Griffin; V.G.. Bro. D. Morris; K.S.. Bro G. Stalker; R.S. N.G., Bro. G. Lovegrove; R.S. V.G., Bro. M. Russell. The installing officer was Bro. A. yuinn. P.G. There was an attendance of 14 members. The installation was practically the only business outside the usual routine. There was a break in tbe weather fast evening, and the promise seemed to be for a good rainfall.
DARFIELD. The- final meeting for the year of the Darneld Band of Hope took tlie f..rm of a social evening. Mr A. G. Holland presided t>?er a large attendance. Mr W. W.
