The advent of a buyer in th*» district ha.s been a source of satisfaction to raisers of pig~. At a meeting of the Tal.-ahuncta Traprovemont Committer on Monday, Dr. R. L. Withers presided over n good attendance The treasurer (Mr -I. Murray) submitted the balance-sheet, showing the receipts to have been £293 l!'s Id. and expenditure £l6B 13s lid, leaving a credit of £l3O 5s 2d, with liabilities amounting to £6. Dr. Withers said the committee must push ahead. If they expended money, more would come :n, as the public appreciated what had already been done. This brought him to the question of improving the refreshment room. At the last meeting of the Council it had been agreed that the engineer should draw up plans for the room, and he now presented the plans to the meeting. He desired that matters should be expedited in order that tenders could be called immediately, so that the rooms would be ready for the New Year's Day's sports. The plans provid- - ed for a room 2Sft v 20ft. to be used as a refreshment room, and another of 14ft x 18ft in two compartments, one with a copper and other necessary conveniences. The big room would accommodate about sixty persons. After discussion the matter was left in the hands of Dr. Withers, with authority to gauarantee the Domain Board £7~> towards the cost of the construction of the building. Mr L. Shannon, on behalf of the Sports C'lub, drew attention to the state of the cycle track. The club had expended £8 on it recently, and another £5 was required to improve it further. Tt was agreed that £o he voted to the club to assist in putting the track in crder. Mr A. W. Baker drew attention to the hill on the western side of the Domain, which ho considered an eyesore. He would like to see some scheme formulated to have- the hillside planted with suitable trees and shrubs. He moved this as a recommendation to the General Committee.

Mr A. B. Clark said Mr Ralph Parsons had expressed his willingness to assist in improving the site by securing kar.ika and ngaio tree*, tf a ft>w sacks of leaf mould from under the bush trees were gathered and strewn about where trees were planted, Mr Parsons considered there would soon hi? an abundance of native trees and shrubs growing.

It was decided that the annual meeting bo held during the month of Januarv.

FERNSIDE. The Fernside School was packed when the R-angiora- Bright Hours Comedy Company presented a most enjoyable programme, the proceeds being in aid of the school prize fund. Tho first pari of the programme • consisted of songs by Messrs G. McAlpine. P. Jenkins, and L. Devlin; recitations by Misses A. Bailey, E. Brady, aud M. McGrath, and Mr W Fahey, and step dances by Miss R. Fitzgibbon. Mrs C. E. Bell was the accompanist. The second portion of the programme consisted of a one-act comedy entitled "My Turn Next," the characters being taken by Misses M. McGrath, E. Brady, E. Miles, and Messrs W. Fahey, S. McCarten, P. Mcßrearty, and Jas. Fahey. The comedy is a very bright and breezy one, and the large audience thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. At the conclusion the chairman, Mr S. C. Hewitt, thanked tho performers for the very pleasant entertainment thev had given. Mr C. J. Roseveare, who has received notice of his transfer to the Sefton School, was presented on behalf of Mrs Roseveare and himself with a supper set from the residents of the Fernside district, as a mark of appreciation for their excellent work among tho pupils and for the district generally. The presentation was made by Mr S. C. Hewitt, chairman of the School Committee, who referred to the success of the children under Mr Roseveare's tuition. Master Arnold Roseveare was presented with a wristlet watch. Mr Roseveare suitably acknowledged the gifts.

SPRINGSTON. On Saturday the Springston School picnic -was held at Timaru, when nearly 200 people joined the train at Rolleston. The weather was ideal and a very pleasant day was enjoyed by one and all. On Sunday the 03rd anniversary of the Springston Methodist Church was celebrated when the preacher in the morning was Mr C. K. Wigglesworth, of Chnstchurch, and in the evening the Rev. A. H. Fowles. At both services there were good congregations In the evening the choir rendered several anthems. On Monday evening a lad working for Mr F. Crump had the misfortune to blow a hole through his foot through a gun going off accidentally. He was attended by Dr. Cooke, who ordered his removal to the hospital. The members of the Slethodist Local Guild were recently entertained by Mrs Fowles at the Parsonage. A very pleasant afternoon was spent. Several amusine competitions were held, being won by Mesdames J. W. Marshall and F. Blakemore and Muriel Mounce. Solos were given bv Mesdames Fowles, Sills, and Marshall. A dainty afternoon tea was served.

Playing at Sprinc;ston or Saturday the match between Irwell and the home team ended in a draw Irwell made 199 (J. Coe 87. W. Doak 60, L. Doak 34) and Springston 62 for two wickets (P. Ridden, not nut, 30. J. Oddy, not out, 14). "W. Leslie three for 7H, Sail three for 80. Re id three for 27, and Savin one for 4 took the wickets for Sprinjpston, and P. Chamberlain two for 24 for Irwell.
