CHURCH CONGRESS
TO BE HELD IN 1931. PRELIMINARY MEETING HELD. The early pa:r of ly3l will be of singular interest to the Anglican Church all over New Zealand and iu Christchurch in particular. About January m Church Congress will be held —the first for six years —and this will be followed by the General Synod, which meets once in three years. It is hoped to have 400 or 500 visitors to the Congross. At a meeting of members of the Diocese held last evening to make preliminary arrangements lor the Congress. Bishop West-Watson, who presided, explained that the project had come into being six years ago, and it was felt that the time had come when they should gather members of the Church and leaders of the Church throughout New Zealand, to confer once again on the difficulties facing them. What seemed clear ten years ago might seem clearer to-day, or might have become out of date, and the clergy of the diocese were anxious to have another Congress. They had hoped that it would be held in another diocese, but that had not proved convenient. The Bishops had given their approval provided that they could get speakers from England and overseas. Referring to the General Synod he said that Nelson Diocese could not, on account of the recent earthquake, which had caused such a great deal of damage, invite the Synod to meet there, and the Christchurch Diocese had offered to take the Synod for 1931, and this would work in with the Church Congress.
