THE SQUARE.

TRAFFIC PROBLEMS. MR G. GOLLLVS SUGGESTIONS. Opinions regarding the suggestions made by Mr George Gould, in yesteri day's issue of The Press, for relieving ! the traffic congestion in Cathedral square, were obtained by a representative of The Press yesterday. In most instances those approached said that thev had not had time fully to consider the matter, and were not prepared, offhand, to express an opinion on the suggestion. Mr J. A. Flesher. chairman of the Tramway Board, remarked that he thought that the proposed new bridge, to be built over the Avon, north of the Chamber of Commerce building, to connect Oxford terrace and Durham street, would certainly be a convenience. Regarding control of the traffic in Cathedral square. Mr Flesher thought that the solution was to be found in one-way tram traffic. Another authority expressed the opinion that he could sec no other way out than the adoption of the scheme proposed by Mr W. J. Mawson, Director of Town Planning, or some modification of it. Mr F. E. Cooke, chairman of the City Council's Works Committee, was of opinion that the proposals were impracticable, and that the ratepayers were not likely to sanction the expenditure involved. The only practicable scheme put forward so far was the lay-out originally proposed by the City' Council. One authority who has given some consideration to traffic matters was of the opinion that much of the congestion at the bottle-neck would be removed if some means could be devised to prevent trams from High street entering the Square, or leaving the Square to use the High street route. He admitted that this problem was not easy of solution, but emphasised the fact that the tram traffic via High street was a big factor in causing congestion at the bottle-neck.
