COOK STATUE.
MR W. T. TRETHEWEY'S MODEL SELECTED. It was announced yesterday, on behalf of Mr M. F. Barnett, that the model of the statue of Captain Cook submitted by Mr \V. T. Trcthewey, of Christchurch, had been placed first of the models received from New Zealand sculptors. The final selection will not be made, however, until the model made by the English sculptor, Mr T. J. Clapperton, has come to hand. Mr J. J. Dougall, of Christchurch, who is on a visit to England, is bringing the model out with him. Mr Dougall is expected to arrive in Christchurch on December 24th. It is understood that if there is not much difference between Mr Clapperton's and Mr Trcthewey's treatment of the subject, preference will be given to the work of the New Zealand sculptor. There were many interested visitors to the Art Gallery yesterday, and Mr Trethcwpy received many congratulations. He told a representative of Tin Press that he intended making another model of the statue, as he was most anxious that the statue should be worthy of the City. It was expected that members of the City Council would visit the Gallery yesterday afternoon, but later arrangements were made for them to inspect the models dozing tb@ week,
