PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs W. Cartwright (Christchureb) visited Geraldine during the ■week-end. Concert. On Sunday evening there was a good attendance at the Town Hall, -when the Geraldine District Band gave one of their popular concerts. The band, under the eonductorship of Mr E. Undrill, has reached a high state of efficiency, and each item was greeted with applause. In addition to selections by the band, items were contributed by:—Miss A. Kelman (recitations), Mies Gimson and Mr C. Gimson (vocal duet), Mr Geo. Knibb (song), Bandsmen Simmons, Fleming, and Brett (2) gave an instrumental quartette. At the conclusion of the concert the conductor thanked the audience for their attendance, and stated that another concert •would be given in a fortnight's time. The Weather. Perfect weather was experienced in Geraldine during last week-end. Large numbers of people visited Te Moana and Peel Forest and the various picnic grounds were well patronised. Visitors are beginning to arrive for the holidays and the various accommodation houses report record bookings for Christmas and New Year. Examination. This morning the annual proficiency examination is being conducted at the Geraldine District High School. Only eighteen candidates are being examined, as a large number of the pupils have been accredited for the examination on the year's work. ORAM. the committee of the Orari Horticultural Society met on Friday when the president, Mr W. E. Cook, presided. Others present were Mrs W. Watson. Miss M. Stevens, Messrs J. B. Roberts, A. Rysdale, G. Bray, T. B. Bates (treasurer), L. Pierce and C. Unwin (secretary). The sub-committee reported that six classes had been inserted in the schedule for the Women's Institutes. The secretary reported that further applications had been received in connexion with the £SO single women's competition. It was decided to obtain quotations for exhibit tickets and first prize tickets, the matter being left in the hands of the president and secretary. The secretary reported that owing to transference from the district Mr W. D. Moss had resigned. Miss C. McQueen was elected to fill the vacancy. Owing to need for further space, the secretary and president were instructed to make arrangements for the hire of a marquee for show day. The matter of tables and fittings for next show were discussed and Messrs Roberts and Pierce were appointed a sub-committee to obtain the necessary timber Mr P. Quirke. Dunsandel, spent the week-end with his relatives in Orari. The Rev. A. C. Whitelaw, travelling secretary of the Presbyterian Bible Class Union, was a visitor to Orari last week, being the guest of the Rev. R. Taylor, the Manse. During the week Bible Class rallies were held at Orton and Arundel branches of the Presbyterian Church. Mr Shaw, of Tiruaru. i; relieving postmaster at Orari. The Orari Tennis Club held its annual handicap singles tournament on the Orari Courts on Saturday under ideal conditions. The women's tournament was won by Miss M. Blissett. while Master J. -T. Earl was the winner of the men's games. RANGITATA. Grain crops appear to be doing well in spite of the lack of rain. Crops on heaw land are particularly well forward, some very even paddocks of wheat being especially notieeable, but on the lighter ground the crops have not done quite as well. In one or two cases farmers are having to plough in their oats owing to the unevenness of the crops. Tt is in the case of late-sown er: >r,s'that rain is urgently needed. WINCHESTER. j Mr L. H. Orbell presided at a meeting of the Victoria Hall Committee to I make arrangements for the holding of a bazaar to raise funds for improvements to the hall. It was arranged that the bazaar be held early in January. It was decided to apply to the Domain Board for the use of the training shed for the day for the holding of the bazaar. Several sideshows were arranged for, and the following were appointed a sub-com-mittee:—Messrs L. H. Orbell, J. Alexander, T. H. Langford, N. Southland C. J. Mcßratney. The general committee decided to hold a further meeting on December 4th. Correspondence from the Minister for Internal Affairs referring to competitions and raffles was left in the hands of the chairman. Mr G. Orbell (Dunedin) intends visiting bis parents, Mr and Mrs L. H. Orbell,'for a short period this week. Miss M. Barker, Waitohi, Winchester, jis visiting Timaru. WAIMATE. On Sunday the Waimate Silver Band visited Oamaru and gave two concerts —one in the Gardens in the afternoon and one in the Theatre in the evening. A large number of Waimate people also made the trip, the day being beautifully ■fine. There was a large attendance of the public at both eoncerts. The Oamaru Band will visit Waimate on Sunday next, when two concerts will also be given. Waimate district exhibitors at the North Otago A. and P. Show were fairly successful, Mr J. Briggs, of Waihao Downs being very prominent in the prize list for pigs and Friesian cattle. In the light horses and hunters' Glasses, Messrs B. T. A. Harrison and J. Waldie and Miss C. McLachlan figured in the prize-list. In the draught-horse section, Messrs J. Patrick, J. Reid, W. Smith, and A. Brown were prize-winners. The Waimate Silver Band will wind up its dance sessions by an extended night on Thursday. These fixtures have proved exceedingly popular throughout the year. fishermen are not meeting with a great deal of success at present. The Waitaki river is reported to be in good fishing order, with feed plentiful. As a result of the long spell of dry weather the Waihao river is low, and very few trout have been caught, though mullet and cod are being taken. The Waimate Ladies' Benevolent Society at its monthly meeting dealt with five applications for assistance, all being granted. Mesdames Scott and d'Auvergne were appointed the Society's visitors for the month. The cabaret dance organised by mem bers of the Waimate Hunt proved very successful, there being over one hundred couples present, the majority being in fancy dress. The Ambassadors' Orchestra (Timaru) provided the music, extras being played by Messrs P. Boyle and D. Wise. Mr E. B. Fraser was M.C. Items were given during the evening by pupilß of Miss Joan Meredith's dancing class, and Miss Meredith, and Messrs F. T. Wallace and D. Stewart. The new courts of the Willowbridge Tennis Club were officially opened by Mr John Bitchener, M.P., at the request of the president of the Club (Mr B. Dawber). There was a large attendance of members and visitors.
