The Greymouth branch of tiie Returned soldiers' Association will present several cases for assessment to the Commission which will sit at Christchureh ! this week to consider methods of providino- for the employment of disabled .soldiers. Mr A. H. McKane (president) will represent the local Association. Wiremen's Certificates. Five Greymouth candidates sat for electrical wiremen's registration certificates in October, but none passed, either in the practical or written tests. Fire at Blackball. A dwelling in Blackball owned by Mr R. Mcttriek and occupied by A. Moore. w:<s destroyed by fire on Saturday evening. Some furniture was saved. Mr J. Allen, while attempting to enter the building by a window, suffered severe cuts to the wrist and hand. ; Magistrate's Court. I A .-itting of the Magistrate's Court was, held this morning. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M.. presiding. Margaret Keating was fined os and costs for driving a motor-ear without a license. David Mef'all, for a similar offence, was fined 5s and costs. William Arnott was fined 5s and costs for driving a motor-lorry on which proper number-plates were not exhibited. John Move, who had a lengthy list of previous convictions, was sentenced to three months' hard labour for vagrancy. For not having his car properly lighted after sunset, Harry E. Wylde was fined 20s and costs. John Lowe, a motor-bus owner, was fined 20s and costs for driving a motor vehicle on which the brakes were inefficient. On a charge of failing to notify an accident he was fined 5s and costs. George Featherstone was charged with the theft of £1 17s 6d and an electric torch at Brunner, and Harry Collins and Samuel Carter with receiving 12s 6d each from Featherstone, knowing it to have been stolen. They were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months, restitution having been made. Arthur McCarthy proceeded against Thomas Mcintosh for assault. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate said it was probably a case of fifty-fifty and dismissed it. Defendant was allowed costs. Adam Pirrie, a miner at Blackball, was fined 20s and costs for assaulting James Levings at Blackball on November 7th. For using bad language to Levings on Xovember 13th, Alexander McDonald was fined 10s and costs.

Motor Accident. A narrow escape from a serious accident was experienced by Mr C. Moss, of Greymouth, yesterday afternoon. Accompanied by his wife and family and 1 Mr J. Fitzge'rald. he was proceeding in the direction of Reefton in his ear. When ascending Potham's hill, about . half a mile on the north side of Ahaura. *lir rar struck a patch of loose shingle 'and was precipitated over the bank, | turning three somersaults before it was j held up by some blackberry growth. I The occupants of the car escaped withi out any injuries, and the car did not j suffer to any extent. Obituary. The death of Mrs Eobert Meharry, of i Upper Kokatahi. took place on Sunday, ; after a short illness. Mrs ' Meharry was a native of Counjty Down. Ireland, and 75 years ;of age. She was one of the pioneers I of the district, and was the first school teacher in the locality. She leaves a ! husband, three daughters, and four sons. Doctor Injured. • While alighting from a bus on Satjiirday night Dr. Denavon, house surjgeon at the Grey Hospital, fell, and ! disioi-ated his shoulder.
