£540 RAISED.

ADDFNGTON SCHOOL'S SUCCESSFUL FAIR. The sum of £540 was raised at the recent Aldington School Fair—£29o more than the committee had expected at the very outside. This was reported at a meeting of the School Committee, which decided to proceed with the drainage of the school baths, the necessary permission having been granted by the Christchurch Drainage Board to connect the baths with the Simeon Btreet sewer. Tenders are to be called for the asphalting of 5.00 square yards of the school playground, and it is also proposed to lay out a large portion of the playground in grass, and to place flowerbeds immediately in front of the main building. It is hoped to obtain a subsidy from the Education Department on these works, the Canterbury Education Board having assured the committee that it will render what assistance it can in this respect. The committee also proposes to treat the children attending the school to a picnic, with transport free.
