She had a serious illness before the earthquake, from which she never recovered. Mns o"''allagh.m had lived in Westport a'! hpr life. She was years of age. Bills Shooting. The Grey Defence Rifle Club's final shoot for the Beath Trophy, resulted in a win for Rifleman K. 8011, with a score of 187, Rifleman G. Richardson being runner-up with lf>. Strike Settled. A settlement of thu strike at the Blackball Mine, which has been idle since September 30th, was effected, following representations made bv %ho National and District Miners' Council. A meeting of the Blackball Miners' Union was held this morning. It was decided, by a majority of 104 to 99, to resume work, on condition that the two engine-drivers concerning whom the strike originated pay back dues, and join the Union before 8 o'clock this evening. The demand that the enginedrivers should be removed from their usual occupations in the mine was abandoned. The two men were previously willing to l?come Union members, but the demand for their removal Was not conceded by the management. Hokitika School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Ilbkitika School Committee was held last evening, Mr A. C. Armstrong presiding. The dental officer reported the following patients treated at the centres named: Woodstock 44, Ruatapn 38, Arahurs 34, Koitorangi 33, Katiieri 25, Kokatahi 27, Humphreys 17, Goldsborough 6, Stafford 2. Mr J. Conning wrote tendering his resignation as secretary of the Committee. It was resolved that he be asked to reconsider the matter. Mr Richards and the Rector reported on an effort to organise a drum and fife band at the school. Members considered the suggestion a good one, and the Reetor, chairman, and Mr Richards were appointed a committee to go into the matter. Cobden Town Board. A meeting of the Cobden Town Board was held last evening, Mr C. K. Miller presiding. Messrs Keency Bros, wrote enquiring why rates had not been collected on the Cobden rifle range. It was shown that the range was owned by the Defence Department, and that Cr. Minchan had entered into an arrangemeat by which he had the use of the land in consideration of his undertaking to combat the spread of weeds and to effect certain improvements. The Town Clerk stated that as the range appeared on the rate book as being owned by the Defence Department, it was exempt from rates, but no notification had been received relative to the arrangement with Cr. Minehan. It was resolved to ask the Defence Department to forward particulars relative to the rang^. Ballway Timetable. Mr H. A. Penn, District Traffic Manager for Canterbury and Westland, is to confer with the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce to-morrow, regarding the recent alterations in the Railway timetable, as complaints have been made by sawmillers on the Otira line, and business people in Greymouth. Harbour Board. The monthly meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board was held this evening. Present: Messrs G. E. Perkins {acting-chairman), D. Tennect, J. Ryall, G. Perrv, and W. Clayton. The treasury advised remitting £97 19s 9d royalties, sod £l4*9 14s wharfage and special rate. The acting-chairman reported that Mr P. J. McLean, chairman the Board, was leaving England for New Zealand on December 13th. The Railway Department advised that it would bear the cost of placing stone under the Greymouth wharf. A donation of £lO was made, to the British Merchant Marine Service. C. Rogers was granted the um of the Board's r.ii;w.iy lino from Preston road for carriage of gravel for the Power Board's dam at Patara. subject to his keeping the line in order and accepting ali responsibility regarding accidents. The Board offered no objection to an application by Charles for a coal lease at Ten Mile Creek, or to one by Richard Wilson for 1009 acres in the North Brunner district. The Board granted the Grey County Council's application for a gravel pit reserve of > acres en the Grey Barrytown road. The appointment of Mr J. C. Gilbert as jentor fieri: was approved. A compassionate allowance equal to six months' salary was granted to the widow of Mr Barrow man.
