Smith has been lady croquet champion of Canterbury for the past three years, and at the last tournament won outright the Ladies' Championship Cup. I MISS AMELIA 6. BROU6BAN. I i The death occurred on Monday at her ■ parents' residence, May's road, Papanui, of Miss Amelia G. Broughan at the early age of 29 years. Miss Broughan was well known in several North Canterbury school districts and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. The funeral took place on Wednesday at the Waimairi Cemetery, the Rev. A." Hopper reading the service at the graveside. The members of the Canterbury Women's Club, who, ignoring the wintry weather conditions, attended at the club last night, were rewarded with a delightful entertainment, provided by the Play-reading and Drama Circle, under the capable direction of M iss Alexander. The first part of the programme consisted of a dramatic reading of "Brother Wolf," one of Laurence Hausman's plays of St. Francis, by Miss Gill, Mrs Ellis, Mrs H. Wyatt, Mrs Andrew, Misses Morgan and Menzies, followed by two songs by Mrs R. McLaren, accompanied by Miss Nancy Hume, and recitations by Mrs Spence Clark. A comedy in miniature—"Elizabeth Refuses," from Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"—formed the second part of the entertainment. This was a particularly good performance, and the dress and set in accordance with the period. The parts were taken by Miss Ellen ■Jones (Elizabeth Bennett), Miss Bridgeman (Jane Bennett), Miss Alexander (Mrs Bennett), Mrs O'Connor (Mr Collins), Lady Catherine de Broush (Mrs Smail). Before supper was served, a vote of thanks to the performers was proposed by Mrs R. T. Tosswill (vice-pre-sident) and carried by acclamation. W.C.T.U. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Wednesday. Miss Henderson presided over a splendid attendance. Apologies were received from Mesdames Lovell-»>mith, Gilpin, Jenkin, Wood, and Miss Davidson. A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mrs Heroert. The president spoke very warmly of the splendid work done so willingly and untiringly by Mrs Herbert in connexion with the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, etr*., also of the interest she always, took in the Union, although too busy to be present at meetings. A letter of thanks for sympathy was received from Mrs R. Malcolm. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs Smith (Cashmere) in her illness. Temperance facts were read. The president welcomed visitors, Mrs Derby (Hastings Union), Mrs Simpson (president, Papanui Union), also Miss Zora Adkins, a new member. Then, on behalf of the Union, with a few words of very warm appreciation of the veteran members, Mesdames McKie, Israel son, and Pedler, the president presented each with a bouquet. Mrs Pedler has been a member of the Union for over thirty years. On behalf of members. Mrs Adkins presented the president, Miss Henderson, with a bouquet as a token of esteem and appreciation of the antiring and willing service rendered by her as president of the Union. Very satisfactory reports of the recent W.C.T.U. District Convention, held last week at Waimate. were «*»ven bv the delegates, Mrs Day and Miss Sargent. Miss Henderson endorsed their remarks, and mentioned particularly the manv kindnesses thev haH all reived, the very friendly spirit which prevailed among *il throughout the conference, and of the insp'ration -jf meeting so many delegates. The speakers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their interesting and comprehensive reports. Mesdames Adkins. Price, and Suckline, in whose hand's were the arrangements for this social meetins. then <*isnensed a delicious afternoon tea. The meeting closed with the Benediction. BIRTHDAY PARTY. A very jolly time was spent on Tuesday evening when Mr and Mrs H. E. Green, Hoon Hay road, entertained a number of friends, on the occasion of their daughter, Mavis's twenty-first birthday. The rooms looked gay with red and lemon streamers, and spring flowers. At supper-time the usual toasts were honoured, Mr W. Hallaway presenting the guest of honour with a large gold key tied with red ribbon. The big kewpie off the cake was won by Mrs Wafforn, other competitions during the evening "being won by Misses P. Black, M. Sloan, B. Mayfield, L. Hughes, and Mr Glenday. Music was supplied by Mrs Warrilow and Miss McCracken. The guests included: Mr and Mrs H. C. Thrower, Mrs Green, Mr and Mrs W.
