SWIMMING.
EAST CHRISTCHURCH CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Bait Christ- ' church Swimming Club wa* held last night, Mr F. L. Collins presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman said the ciub was in a sound position. He made reference to the fine performances put up by A. Stokes, a member of the ciub, during the past year. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, the balance-sheet showing a credit of £27 6s 2d. Mr A. Cunningham, who has resigned from the club owing to his forthcoming departure for the West Coast, was made an honorary membet for the year in appreciation of past services. The resignation of Miss D. Brown was accepted. The constitution of the committee was altered from five men and four women to seven men and two women. The annual subscription of seniors was raised by Si 6d, and that Of juniors by Is, to be reducible by these amounts if paid by January Slst. The club's colours were altered from navy and white to navy with a gold and white monogram to be in accordance with the colours of the East Christehurch School. Smith; assistant hon. secretary, Miss R. Anderson; treasurer, Mr J. Lane; committee, Messrs V. Atkinson, T. Patten, F. Foster, A. Stokes, K. Cameron, A. Howarth, A. Taylor, Misses Clarkson and Mathieson; auditor, Mr G. C. Boyce; delegates to Centre, Messrs T. Patten and V. Atkinson; club hsndicapper, Mr V. Atkinson ; delegate to Boyal Life-Saving Society, Mr F. L. Collins; Royal Life-Saving Society coach, Mr G. P. Bam ford. Messrs F. L. Collins, P. D. Stokes, and H. Williams were elected as life members. Mr Patten moved as a recommendation to the committee that a sum, probably £lO, be set aside for the purpose of providing a coach for the children of the East Christchurch School and junior members of the club. The motion was seconded by Mr Batchelor and carried. It was decided that the certificate won by D. P. Lindsay for the one mile championship. and presented to the club by the English Amateur Swimming Association, be framed and displayed in the Tepid Baths, orovlded the necessary permission is obtained. . . „ Mr Batchelor moved a» a recommendation to the committee that the club purchase a distinctive badge to be presented to members representing the club in teams' scratch competitions. ST. ALBANS CLUB. The annual meeting of the St. Albane Swimming Clnb was held last evening, Mr J. Fronting presiding over • good attendance. Speaking to the annual report, the chairman said that the club wes handicapped by the need of proper bath facilities. A move, ment was on foot to have a more modern building erected, and something definite would soon be put before the puoiic. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory position. Flewellyn; delegate to Swimming Centre, C. J. W. Wilcox; delegate to Life-Saving Society, Miss Clegg. The St. Albans School Committee forwarded the following eoaditions, inter alia, for the conduct of the baths:—The hours shall be week-days, 6.30 to 7.50 a.m., and from 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 6.30 to 7 a.m., and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Sundays, 7 to 0.80 a.m. Delegates were appointed to wait on the School Committee with a view to the amendment of the conditions governing the notice to be given in case of infringement. A member stated that it was contended that the baths had not been conducted properly; that bad language had been allowed, and proper care had not been taken. He had been present practically every day the baths were opened, and had heard bad language used only on two occasions. The delegation will consist of Messrs Pick•rd, Wilcox, and Stanton, and Mil* Clegg. In connexion with the new baths, the chairman said that a new site had been selected, and could be purchased satisfactorily. CAR SMASHES POLE. OCCUPANTS DISAPPEAR. (?*KCO ASSOCIATION TBXAOSAX-) DUNEDIN, September 26. A motor-car collided with and brought down ap eleetrie light pole at the Normanby oar terminus shortly after nine o 'clock to-night, and then stniek a pole carrying the overhead tram wire. The ear was badly damaged by the collision, and the wiring was slightly damaged by I fire. The fire brigade was called out and the blaze speedily extinguished. When the brigade arrive# the occupants of the car had disappeared and no trace of them has been found. <EX-CAPTAIN COMMITS SUICIDE. [TXS VMM Special Barries.} AUCKLAND, September 26. A retired sea captain, Frederick Joseph Gill, aged about 47, was found dead in a room of his house at 3 Tui street, Devonport, about eight o'clock to-night. There was the gas tube of a radiator in his mouth. The discovery was made by the police, who broke into the house at the request of deceased's wife. It is understood that Gill had been alone in the house all day, his wife having left in the morning. When she returned the doors were locked and Gill was missing. The Devonport police were then called. Gill had apparently been dead for several hours. He leaves a wife and four children.
