GERALDINE R.C.
PRICKLES WINS CUP. GOOD RACING AND CLOSE FINISHES. The Geraldine Raeing Club held its Spring Meeting on the Orari racecourse yesterday before an excellent attendance of the public. The weather was fine for the greater part of the day, but heavy rain commenced to fall before the la?t race. The track was in first-tlaes order and the racing of a thoroughly interesting nature. Prickles, owned by the Christchureh sportsman, Mr W. J. Blake, scored a popular win in the Geraldine Cup, and after the race he was presented with the silver cup that formed part of the stake. Mr F. C. Thomas, handicapper to the club, had some interesting finishes as a result of his work, and the officials had all arrangements well in hand. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £10,275, as against £10,116 on the first day last year. First Hurdles Handicap saw all eight acceptors face the starter, Goldtown, the favourite, carrying 428 tickets, as against the 376 invested on Beauty Light, the second choice. Pangolin and Goldtown were the quickest to begin, and they carried on past the grandstand from Heisler, Antrim Boy, and Beauty Light, who made a bad jump and dropped back. The order was unchanged going down the back, but Bangiawhio moved closer to the leaders. Five furlongs from home Pangolin made a bad jump and lost several lengths, but hs was quickly into his stride again and was in front before the straight was reached. Pangolin held his advantage to the post, while Antrim Boy accounted for Bangiawhio rather comfortably. Blue Peter and Goldtown were the next to finish. Pangolin was making his first appearance in public over hurdles, and but for one bad jump five furlongs from home he gave quite a good display. Antrim Boy jumped well, Bangiawhio was slow to begin but picked up a lot of ground over the concluding stages, Blue Peter does not seem to possess much speed. Goldtown was well beaten three furlongs from home, and Waihemo was never dangerous. A Promising Pilly.
Bellbird was slightly better backed than Captivate in the Ohapi Hack Handicap, with Inevitable the third choice. From the barrier rise Briar Thorn and Inevitable made the running, with Bellbird and Captivate next. This quartet were still in the v an as the straight was reached, when Inevitable drew out to win very comfortably by a couple of lengths from Tane, who finished with a good burst of speed to beat Captivate by the narrowest of margins. Inevitable won in very convincing style, and is a smart three-y«*r-old who
ought to go on to do bigger things. Captivate appeared to be going better than anything else a hundred yards from the post, but he then faded and was beaten by the fast finishing Tane. The most likely looking of the unplaced division included Briar Thorn and Bellbird. A Popular Win. The Geraldine Cup saw Prickles, 787 tickets, and Money Mine, 782, almost evenlv backed. Royal Game was the first to show out from the barrier rise, with Money Mine, Taboo, Wingatui, Evening, and Prickles following. The last-named moved up with a mile to go, but Royal Game and Money Mine were in front going down the back, just in front of Prickles and Evening. At the entrance to the straight Prickles ranged alongside Royal Game, and the pair fought out a great finish, Prickles going away in the last fifty yards to win bv a length. < "it was a fine race, and Prickles won on her merits. She finished very gamely and fairly outstayed Royal Game at the finish. The latter made most of the running, and his performance was a good one. Money Mine was always with the leaders, and had every chance, but he was not good enough. Malmsey was going better at the finish than at any other part of the race. Evening and Taboo did the best of the remainder. Llewellyn Beaten. Mao Locanda was the only scratching from the Geraldine Trot, and this left a field of fourteen. From the opening of the betting the American pacer Llewellyn was the favourite, and he wound up carrying 693 tickets, while Headlight was the only other seriously considered. There was one false start, and when the race started Llewellyn was quickest to find his hopples, and at once led from Teremoa. The lattef raced past Llewellyn after a couple of furlongs had been covered, and he led past the stand with Du Maurier in third place and Little Victor next. Teremoa established a ten-lengths' lead going down the back, and it was not until half a mile from home that Llewellyn attempted to bridge the gap. The latter made a big effort, but in spite of a tangle, Teremoa held his own to win by four lengths, while Jeanette Locanda was fifty yards away third. Teremoa is a useful sort, trained by J. N. Clarke, but it was plain that Llewellyn was not suited by the state of the track. The race should do him the world of good, and the first time he is raced on a dirt track he will be considered. Headlight lost ground at the start and Tama and Wyina took n6 part in the race. Backers Astray. Serious betting on the Squatters' Handicap was confined to Caterpillar and Stealth, who between them carried almost half the total on the machine. From the start Rapier and First Raid were the leaders, but both quickly lost their positions, and with a furlong covered Bulolo and Arch Arrow were showing the way to Silver Coot and Stealth. The last-named faded out before the straight was reached, and Arch Arrow, Bulolo, and Silver Coot straightened up almost level for the run home. Silver Coot and Arch Arrow drew away to fight out a great finish, the former gaining the verdict by a narrow margin and returning his supporters a good dividend. Silver Coot was allowed to go out at an altogether false price, for he looked well and was not badly treated. Arch Arrow and Bulolo were always in the leading division, and Rapier, after losing his position early, was putting in great work over the concluding stages. Caterpillar was never dangerous. and Stealth failed badly when the pressure was applied. Both will have to improve a good deal to get on the winning list in the near future. Aspiring, who carried only 163 tickets, was never prominent. Glenrowan Wins. Glenrowan and Sea Raid were the two heavily backed ones in the Baukapuka Handicap, and there was a big drop to the third choice, Mount Boa. The last-named quickly raced to the front, and with Colonel Quex, Amourette, Solgele, and Glenrowan handy, he carried on the running down the back and round the top turn, where Glenrowan moved closer to the leader. Mount Boa was first into the straight and he led to within a hundred yards of the post, where Glenrowan caught him, and, finishing strongly, won very nicely. Sailing Home finished fast and was only a neck away third. The winner is a good stafiip of gelding trained at Wingatui, and his finishing run was impressive. Mount Boa hit a merry pace and failed only over the last bit. Sailing Home finished at a great pace. Sea Raid started smartly, but lost her position to drop back to nearly last with half a mile to go. She put in a great run over the last part to finish fourth. She should win shortly. A Derby Candidate. Mac Locanda was better backed than Ulm in the Orari Trot. From the start Guy Denver led, with Royal Silk second and King's Cup close up. Rounding the bend Silver Sea and Grattan Queen were handy. The bunch raced together going down the back, while Ulm also made up ground. Boyal Silk w«b first into the straight, with King's Cup, Ulm, and Silver Sea bandy, and John Noble and Otaio Rose coming, fast. In a good finish Royal Silk held his own to win rather comfortably, while Silver Sea hung on well to beat Guy Denver, who came with a good run at the finish. Mac Locanda broke up at the start and was never dangerous. Grattan Queen went a good race and may do even better as a result of the experience. John Noble put up a very fine performance to finish fourth. Royal Silk is a very promising three-year-old, and claims an engagement in the New Zealand Derby. A Close Finish. Honeycomb was made a warm favourite for the Belfield Handicap, but it was a good betting race, and Narrative and Membo also carried solid support. There was some trouble at the start owing to the misbehaviour of Nincompoop, and when the barrier was released he got all the worst of the sendoff. Membo, Don Jose, and Narrative were the quickest to begin, while the favourite was slow to find his feet. Narrative and Membo sorted themselves out from the rest going round the top turn and they continued to fight the issue down the straight. Membo was being hard ridden at the distance, but he stuck to his 'work and it was only in the last fifty yards that Narrative got the better of him. It was a very exciting finish. Chickwheat, after being well back early in the race, came with a good run to get third money, and Honeycomb also came fast over the last part. Better placed in the early stages he would have been closer to the winner at the finish. Nincompoop after his slow beginning, put in a great run once on the journey, and it seems that he is not yet a spent light. TO-DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. (rssea «sso!-t,»TroK nst.KaaAV.)
