STREET APPEAL.
IN AID OF ST. SAVIOUR'S HOMES. LARGE SLM RAISED. This year has been filled with benefit functions of ft» descriptions undertaken with the purpose of relieving the burden of debt on St. Saviour's Homes, and although it is several years since a street collection was made, an appeal was planned for yesterday, and was a great success. The willing helpers, who worked from an early hour yesterday in their attempts to entice shillings from the pockets of the generous and ungenerous alike, are to be congratulated on the sum which is available as the result of their efforts. Miss M. G. Havelaar, perhaps the most devoted worker that the Homes are fortunate enough to possess, stated last evening that the total collected was £462 18s. More than a hundred ladies took part in the work, and about 120 boxes were in various places throughout the City, appealing to the passers-by. Each worker collected for two hours, ufld the Navy League Hall, Worcester street, was turned Into the headquarters from which the boxes were available, and to which the boxes—often well ladenreturned throughout the day. Mrs H. T. 3. Thaeker, Mrs Algar Williams, and Miss Steward, were in the depot all day giving out the boxes, keeping tallies, and arranging for the maintenance of various collection posts. Miss Heywood and Mrs Marriner worked the whole day at providing refreshments for the helpers at the Navy League Hall. The Eev. J. i\ Ooursey, and Messrs G. Baker, F, Jarrett, and A. O. 8. Gibbt (secretary of the St. Saviour's Homes) looked after the financial end of the appeal, and were kept extremely busy throughout the day. A feature of the day was the excellent show staged on the balcony of the United Service Hotel, by members of the "Whirligigs Bevue Company," now appearing at Fuller *s New Opera House. Their entertainment was a great success and the day derived much benefit from it. Sincere thanks must be expressed to them for their public-spirited offer.
Mrs J. S. Kelly went to the saleyards at Addington, and her excellent work there resulted in the raising of £0 for the fund. The outstanding figure amongst the collectors must certainly have been Sister McMurtie, who head' ed the list with over £lO. A Copper Trail in front of the Cathedral, was carried out successfully by Sister May and present and past girls of the Shirley Home. The work of organisation fell to many, but Miss M. O. Havelaar and Mr A. G. S. Gibbs must surely have special mention. St. Saviour's Homes owe a great deal to the splendid work of these two helpers.
