Described on the charge sheet as a traveller, Donald Campbell, aged 62, whose office was raided on Saturday by detectives, appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of having carried on the business of a bookmaker. "I've.not, Ion" arrived here from Canada," he told Mr Hunt, S.M. "I did not want to infringe the laws of this beautiful little country." . <<You are liable to a fine of »500, or six months' imprisonment, you know," said the Magistrate. Chief-Detective Hammond Baid that a few weeks ago Campbell conceived the idea of sending circulars to farmers asking them to interest themselves in what he termed the "sport of kings, and take a double on the Avondale race Meeting. One man who received the circular complained to the police, with the result that on Saturday a search warrant was obtained and Campbell's office was visited, a quantity or betting materia] being found. He is only in a small way of business, and had £ls on him when arrested, added Mr Hammond. Campbell was fined £lO.
