CAPTAIN CAMERON.
retirement from the sea. (tko.vc ors owjr correspondjbxt.) LONDON, August 15. Captain J. J. Cameron has retired from service at sea, and New Zealanders will mi® a very popular officer of the New Zealand Shipping Company service. This week Captain Cameron is away from London, on a visit to Brighton. Referring to his retirement, "Blue Peter" comments:— "Captain Cameron, like Sir Frank Notley and Captains Borland and King, is one of the older generation of seamen, and received his early training in the dipper ships of Thomas Law and Co., remaining in sail a* third, second, and then as first mate. Born in 1869, he joined the New Zealand Company as a junior officer in October, 1895, was promoted Commander in 1907, and had charge successively of five of the company's vessels until his appointment to the Remuera which he commanded for no fewer than twenty-three voyages. It is by such continuous union between ship and commander that the reputation of a ship, for good or ill, is made, and Captain Cameron has been known as the popular commander of a popular vessel.
