NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. AUSTRALIAN TOUR SUCCESSFUL. i A .meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Hockey Association was held last evening. Mr H. S. J. Goodman (the president) occupied the chair, and there were also present: Messrs P. N. Quartermain, S. G. Holland, C. Bellamy,, R. Grade, H. Throp, I. Gunn, and W. H. Down (secretary). The Australian Hockey Association wrote conveying sincere thanks for the excellent manner in which the New Zealand Association had organised and conducted the recent tour of the Australian team in 'New Zealand. All arrangements had worked smoothly, and congratulations were extended on the "efficient work of the honorary secretary. A tribute also was paid to the work of the referees. The major and minor associations which had secured matches against the visitors also were thanked for the hospitality extended to the Australians throughout New Zealand. The Wellington Hockey Association wrote asking for a frank expression of opinion from .all' Associations regarding the utility ox visits from Australian teams ..from the point of view of finance and" the general benefit to hockey. Mr 'Down reported that all the Associations which had matches with the Australians had come out well financially except Wellington and Auckland. The Auckland Association would have made a profit but for the~ very bad weather experienced on the day of the match. The New Zealand Association had made a very satisfactory profit on the tour. The Australians had played hockey of a satisfactory standard, and undoubtedly the game had benefited in New Zealand as the result of the visit. The visitors would have been seen even to better advantage had the weather been kinder, but it was rather unfortunate that a wet July had left the majority of the grounds wet and muddy. He considered that so long as the Australians couM send over the best players from the Commonwealth, the tours should be encouraged. The chairman stated that undoubtedly the tour had ben a great success, but that he thought that it would be a good idea to circularise Associations so that definite information would bo available for future reference. The secretary waß instructed to writs to affiliated Associations accordingly. . Correspondence was received from the Canterbury and Otago Associations regarding the appointment of referees in the recent shield match. Mr Holland moved that in the opinion of this Association, team managers should not be nominated as referees and that in all matches undeT the control of the New Zealand Association the appointment of team manager as well as selectors be debarred The motion was seconded by Mr Thrtrp and. after a short discussion, was carried unanimously. A letter was reoeived from the_ Levin Association applying for direct affiliation with the New Zealand Association and euggeat-'ng boundaries. Tt was decided to write to Wellington and Manawatu, tie Associations affected by tho proposed alterations, asking for further information. Mr Down reported that when in <he North' Island recently he had investigated the di«;

pute between the Wairarapa and the proposed new Association of the Bash Union, which has its headquarters at tahiatua. He recommended that those clubs which play on Saturdays remain with Wairarapa, end that the Wednesday clubs form a separate Bush Union Sub-Association to be affiliated with Wairarapa. The recommendation was adopted and it was decided to notify the parties concerned. Mr Throp moved that, with a view to furthering the game in. outlying districts, copies of all circulars to Associations be sent - also to sub-associations, many of which at present were in the dark regarding Dominion happenings, particularly with reference to overseas touring teams. Mr Holland seconded the motion, which was carried. It was decided to congratulate the New Zealand Women's Hockey Association an the initiative shown in organising a team to visit Bouth Africa, and "wishing the team every success. A letter wae received from the Wellington Association objecting to the action of the New Zealand Association in preventing the Wellington selector from refereeing in the match between Wellington and the Australians. after the said selector had been appointed to officiate as refeTee in the match bv the Wellington Association. The chairman reported that he had drawn Wellington's attention to the principle laid •lown ten vears aeo that selectors were debarred from refiTeeing. Wellin<rton, however, was still dissntisfied was asking for further explanations. The secretary was instructed to nctifv Wellington that it is unite clear that the New Zealand Hockev Asso riation is in charge of hooker in this Bominion. and that i+B interpretations and rulings for the conduct of the game must be accented. The Nelson Association wrote advising that it had susnended a player for two years for misconduct. It was decided to write asking Nelson for full details regard the reason for suspension.
