ATHLETICS.

*. ■ SOUTHBRIDGE CLUB. Mr W. G. Hill presided over » meeting of the committee of the Southbridge Athletic and Cycling Club held to transact business relating to the South- Island championship road race, to be conducted by the club tomorrow week, and te the Labour Day sports meeting. The secretary reported that a sum of £1 had been forwarded to the Centre, as authorised, being the value of dance tickets sent tor sale. It was agreed that the road race should finish in front of the Town Hall, and that the road leading to the finishing line be graded on the morning of the rac#. The secretary had arranged for a bus to convey the competitors from Ohristchurch, and for a carrier to transport the cycles. It was resolved that a working bee should be held next Thursday on the Recreation Ground cycling track. It is desired to have a strong force of workers with spades. Messrs T. Fathers and R. Ridden were elected members.

Inwood; timekeepers, Messrs 3. Thompson. R. T. McMillen, R. Bruce, W. Scott, and W. J. Lemon; blackboard 'stewards, Messrs G. Dyce, VC. Kemp, G. Couch, and W. Carter; gatekeepers, Messrs M Hantze. P. Harney, and E. J. S. Lochhead, with Messrs G. Ridden and 3. Greenwood as assistants; marshals for cars, Messrs D. K. Lochhead, M. Twiss, R. C. Shearer, and D. Montgomery. The programme for the last sports meeting was adopted tor this* year, with certain alterations. For the race of 100 yds for boys under 14. the prize-money was reduced to 10s and ss. The first one-mile cycle race was named the Milltown Handicap, and the second one the Lakeside Handicap. The three-quarter mile race wa» named the Sedge mere Handicap, and the half-mile race the Little Rakaia Handicap. A proposal to add a football relay race was left for next years committee to consider. It was left to the president and secretary to include a baby show, provided that a judge could be secured. A ladies" cycle race of half a mile was added; Tn %he dancing section a "district Highland Fling class for competitors under twelve was included, and the prizes were fixed at ios and ss. , „ , ~r Messrs H. Ridden, with -the president and secretary, were appointed a sub-committee, to report to a later meeting upon the advisability of tne club conducting sideshows on its own account.
