SALMON FISHING.
SEASON RESTRICTED. The season for salmon fishing i s to be shortened by fifteen days, according to information given at last mght' 3 meeting of the Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. Licenses are being issued on the assumption that it closes on April instead of on May loth, as formerly. The Council recently asked tor information from the Marine Department on the subject. The Department's reply stated that it was not prepared to xtend the season till May loth as requested. It had been found that quite a large proportion of the salmon running by the end of April were in an advanced stage of the spawning condition. It was just a question as to whether the season for fishing for sale should not be cut down to April 30th, and this question was under consideration. The secretary (Mr C. W. dervev) said that licenses were being issued tvn the assumption that the season for oninnat fishing should end on April 30th. A further letter advised that the Society's recommendation that the npftiii" of '•nlTnoti be not nllowed in the Waimakariri Hiring next season was being considered.
