: «) COUNTY COUNCIL. A meeting of the Beathcote County Council was held last evening, when Mr J. L. Danks was in the chair. Also present were: Org. W. W. Scarff, J. H. Moore, W. Kerr, A. Williams, J. F. Scott, and C. Flavell. A letter was before the Council from the Traffic Committee of the Christchurch City Council, suggesting some improvements to traffic control in the City, and asking for any suggestions the county might have. The letter was referred to the chairman to act as he thought fit. The Waimairi and North Beach Progress League wrote asking the Council to make a by-law similar to Section 28 of the Christchurch City by-laws in reference to passengers alighting from trams. The clerk stated that provision had already been made for this in the new bylaws. The same letter also asked that the Council keep in view the increasing need for the widening of Bower bridge at the end of Wainoni road, as the road was becoming a very popular one for motorists. It was resolved that the matter be kept steadily in view, but that it could not be done at present. The Returned Soldiers' Association advised that they were prepared to make a grant of £SOO for the relief of unemployment on the , formation of a road in the county, provided j that that amount was subsidised by the ! Council by JEIOOO. Mr Danks said that work doiie by these i relief works men was equal in quality to any ever done in the county. The offer was a generous one. It was decided that the Returned Soldiers' Association be thanked for their offer, and the Council would be glad to accept it if the work was proceeded with. The Opawa-Hillsborough Burgesses' Association asked that the Council provide additional street lighting in Avoca Valley, as at present there were only two lights over a distance of half a mile. It was pointed out by the Council that this work could not be done until next winter, but it would be considered again then and dealt with. The same body also wrote drawing the Council's attention to the dangerous corner in Hills road, at the foot of the repervoir. "Visibility was hindered by a tall hedge on private property In regard to this matter it was decided that if the Association secured permission from the owner of the land on which the hedge was situated to have it cut, then the Council would do the work. A petition was forward from St. Andrew's Hall residents advising that "the -present easement was being widened to 18 feet, and asking the Council to take this over as a roadway, so that ratepayers may receive some of tht ordinary benefits derived from this easement being a road. The petition was signed by seven ratepayers. Cr. Williams and the inspector were deputed to make an inspection and report to the next meeting of the Council, The inspector's report, which was adopted, stated that daring the past month tar patch i ing had bees done on Wainoni road. Three trucks of tram metal had been put on the Sumner road at the Mount Pleasant pomp house, The roller bad been over the roads in the Mt. Pleasant riding. Bridle Path road, from Vogel street to Short street, had been made up with metal, and on part of Lee street the road had bees widened. Bridle Path road had been graded and was being built up on the outside. Patching with metal had been carried out on Station and Hill* roads. Twelve chains of water main had been laid in the Cashmere riding, ■ and it was proposed to extend that line a further 12J chains. The county's motor traffic inspector reported that he had issued 109 summonses for various offences op to August 16th. Out of these he had secured 103 convictions, with fines amounting to £l3l lis 64. The report was adopted. In connexion with the Cashmere water supply reservoir contract, a report stated that the contractors had been engaged in excavating the trenches for the main and field pipes. In spite of continual protest, however, at the slowness of the progress made, no effort had been made by the contractors to expedite the work. The Council passed the progress payment, and decided that a notification be sent to the contractors stating that the Council was dissatisfied with the progress wade and intended to enforce the penalty when the contractors' time was op. A report was before the Council making an estimate for the proposed new reservoir at the "Takshe." The estimated cost was £2167 for a circular reservoir to hold 200 000 gallons. The chairman pointed ont that this reservoir was necessary, as it was on it that any further consumers would have to draw their supply.
