The nor'-west wind, which commenced to blow on Sunday night, still continues. Although the weather is sunny and fine, the wind is very cold and this, with the clouds of dust, makes conditions out-of-doors rather unpleasant. The soil is now drying rapidly and preparations for spring sowing are being pushed forward. The recent wet weather has been of benefit in binding the roads, and these are now in fairly good condition. There is a good deal of sickness in the district at present, many people suffering from colds and influenza, which are fortunately of a mild nature. Hutt : Road Board on Monday a protest was made against the policy of the Government in taxing the farming community by means of the proposed supertax on farm lands. The chairman said it did not come within the province of the Board to deal with political matters but as representing a large farming community he thought that the proposals in the Budget were vita! to farmers generally and far from satisfactory. A general discussion ensued and subsequently the following resolution was carried: "That the Mt. Hutt Road Board, representing the farming community of the Mt. Hutt district, emphatically protests against the Govern ment's increased taxation in adding i further burdens to the primary producer particularly in regard to the mortgage exemption from £IO,OOO to £SOOO a copy of this resolution to b< forwarded to the Prime Minister and Messrs D. Snowrakers who have returned from the back country state that snow between 15 to 20 feet deep lies in some of the valleys.
