SENSATION IN ROME. (UYITKB PRKSS ASSOCIATION—BT ELECT BJO TSLBOBAVa- COPVHIQHT.) (Received August sth, 7 p.m.) LONDON. August 4. The "Daily Chronicle's" Paris correspondent states that Signor Mussolini has lost three redoubtable prisoners who were banished to the arid island of Ltpari- They are Knnlion Lussu, Prolessor Rosshli, and Francesco Nitti, a nephew of the ex-Prime Minister, who is now in exile in Paris. They are all heroes of the war, but opposed to the Fuscisti movement. They had been guarded with the utmost care by night sentries and patrol motor-boats, yet they managed to escape. The news is not allowed to be published in Italy, but it is generally known in Rome and has created a great sensation. —Australian Press Association.
[Francesco Nitti the elder, who is living in exile in Paris, camo under Mussolini's edict in 11>26 when he was removed from his post as a university professor, and in 1927 was deprived of hU Italian citizenship on account of his repeated attacks on Fascism and Italy's Albanian policy. He depicted Mussolini as a "glib, unscrupulous, force-worshipping adventurer." He stated that nearly 10,000 Italians had been deported to the volcanic islands —of which Lipari is one—on the African colonies.]
