SUPER-TAX ON LAND.

PROTEST FROM ASHBURTON. The chairman of the Ashburton County Council (Mr James Carr) has forwarded the rollowing resolution to the Prime Minister and Messrs D. Jones and T. Burnett, M.P.'s:— "That this Council enters an emphatic protest against the farming community being singled out for such an increase in taxation, more especially against the proposal to reduce exemption against mortgages from £IO,OOO to £SOOO and the doubled-barrelied option of land or income tax, as we consider that the primary producer is already carrying more thai his fair share of the burden of taxation." In a covering letter Mr Carr said he trusted that further consideration would be given to the proposal which was causing great concern to the mainstay of the Dominion —the farming community. As a result 01 the new taxation policy of the Government, it is understood that the owner of a large and wellknown holding near Methven has given instructions for the preliminary work in connexion with the cutting up of. the estate.
