"SUNSHINE AND COD-LIVER OIL."
LECTURE BY PROFESSOR PERCIVAL. At the Public Library Lecture Hall last evening an extremely interesting address on "Sunshine and Cod-Livor Oil" was given by Professor E Percival, of Canterbury College. The lecture, which was illustrated by excellent lantern slides, was one of,a series which is being given in aid of the Children-'s Library, and the audience was large and appreciative. At the beginning of his address. Professor Percival pointed out that his subject was one of interest to the people of New Zealand generally, and to the people of Christchureh in particular. We suffered here from a deficiency of iodine in the sub-stratum, which had for its result a rather pronounced increase in the prevalence of goitre. Other countries, however, suffered in different ways from other deficiencies, and in large cities it often happened that sunlight was very scarce. Quite a long time ago it was shown that the ultra-violet rays present in sunlight had a decided effect on many forms of organic growth Lack of a few particular substances called vitaralnes hindered growth also, and in cod-liver oil there was a high percentage of on© of the most important of these. Tha locturer went on to describe at lenpth the intricate scheme of animal life in the ocean. Food values, and the complicated relations which exist between the diets of all types of ocean life were next described, and many slides dealing with this aspect of the subject were shown. At the beginning of the lecture the speaker was introduced by Mr <T. Tt. Montgomery, who mentioned the fact of his recent appointment to the chair of Biology at Canterbury University College.
