FIREMAN KILLED.
FALL FROM GANGWAY. [THE PBBSS Special Serrlce.J AUCKLAND, July 19. At the result of a fall from the gangway of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion steamer Mahia, this evening, a fireman, Frederick Stanford, sustained injuries from which he died in the ambulance on the way to the Auckland Hospital. It is not known how he came to falJ into th» water. Stanford was following two companions up the gangway when they suddenly he*rd a dull thud„ followed by a splash. They saw Stanford in the water between the vessel and the wharf, and immediately rescued him. He was then unconscious. Artificial respiration was applied for about 15 minutes. On arrival at hospital it was found that the man was dead. It is believed that he struck the base of his skull on one of the piles, and that his neck was broken. Stanford was married, with children living in England, and was aged 33 years. As far as is known his only relative in the Dominion is a brother-in/law, also a member of the Mania's crew. ;
