TURF GOSSIP. The acceptances for the three chief events at next month's Grand National Meeting must be considered very satisfactory. The total is 58, as against 61 twelve months ago, made up as follows, last year's figures appearing in parentheses:—Grand National Steeplechase 13 (13), Winter Cup 27 (34), Grand National Hurdles 18 (14). The Grand National Steeplechase has filled with a .strong field, including the •winners of this year's Egmont (Roman Abbey), Great Northern (Uralla), Otago (Fabriano), Wellington (King's Guard), and July (Maunga) Steeplechases decided this season, while last year's National victor, Wiltshire, is again engaged. The most notable defections are Nukumai, who, however, figures in the Grand National Hurdles, and Brigadier Bill, winner of the Wanganui Steeplechase, but neither's prospects looked bright in the face of their Wellington efforts. The North Island supplies all but three of the acceptors, and of these three Fabriano hails from Washdyke and Eadiate and Lord Eanald from Eiccarton. An interesting feature of the field is the fact that the Waikato owner-trainer has both King's Guard and Roman Abbey engaged, and should this pair be saddled up, the bracket will account for a large share of public patronage. Last year seven faced the starter, and the indications point to this number being well exceeded next month. The absence of Paddon from the Winter Cup will be a disappointment to many. Advice from the north during the last few days stated that the speedy gelding had not done satisfactorily Binco returning from the Wellington Meeting, and it was deemed advisable not to risk the trip with him. The field left in represent good winter class and there is material not only to ensure a memorable race, but to cause a wide range of opinion on the part of investors. Of the total the South Island is responsible for 14, and the North for 13. The field finally produced in the race twelve months ago totalled 21, including the bracketed pair Black Mint and Eoyal Game, who again figure in the list. The winner on thai occasion, Bisox, is missing, but the runner-up, Kaiti, will again be on hand.

Probably the beat field of hurdlers to bo assembled in New Zealand this season, appears in the acceptances for the Grand National Hurdles, including last year's winner, Nukumai, and the third horse, Red Fuchsia. Other outstanding performers are Mister Gamp (Century and Great Northern Hurdles), Overhaul (Trentham and Winter Hurdles), Novar (Hawke's Bay Hurdles), and Lancer (Otago Hurdles). Only nine contested the event twelve months ago, but a much bigger and stronger field is certain to make the final call on August 15th. Kawini, King's Guard, Eoman Abbey, and Uralla are included in the acceptances for both the Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdle Eace. The nominations for the minor •vents at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting total 481, ns against 483 last year, made up as follows, the latter figures being shown in parentheses:—Hunters Hurdles 14 (18), Trial Hurdles 16 (21), Cashmere Hate 38 (26), Jumpers' Flat 23 (14), Enfield Steeples 17 (14), Avonhead Handicap 26 (25), Hunt Cup 15 (18), Woolston Handicap 32 (28), Spreydon Hurdles 25 (32), August 'Handicap 29 (30), Sumner Handicap 28 (27), Islington Handicap 22 (24), Longbeach Handicap 46 (36), Aylesbury Steeplechase 21 (21), Styx Hurdles 28 (45), Heathcote Handicap 32 (37), Redcliffs Handicap 31 (33), Selwyn Handicap 38 (34). The train arrangements made for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting on Thursday next and the South Canterbury Hunt Club's fixture on Saturday are advertised in to-day's issue.

Glendowie, who has been at W. J. Tomkinson's stable since arriving from Wellington, will be established at Eiccarton next week in charge of his trainer, Albert Bhodes. He was one of the real failures of the recent Wellington Meeting. Twelve months ago, when at the peak of his form, he was allowed to drop out of his Trentham and Eiccarton engagements on the ground that he had too much weight. In the intervening period, events have occurred which make it appear extremely doubtful if he will ever be the horse he was at that stage. Black Mint is being tried as a hurdler, and gave a promising display la his initial effort at Trentham this Week. Several horses left Wellington for Sydney by the Maheno yesterday, including Nightmarch, True Shaft, Seatown, and H. Telford's team of six. Vesperus was not raced at Wellington owing to a leg injury, but will probably be brought down to the Ricoarton gathering. Heavy rain has fallen at Trentham •inee last week's Meeting, and the tracks are at present in a deplorable state. Mr W. R, Kemball's team of horses, trained by T. J. Daly, have removed from Opaki to Trentham.

IWaitaunaha, Just John, and Kawini, who remained at Trentham after last week's Meeting, are expected to arrive at Eiccarton early next week. Three well-known racing officials, Messrs C. C. O'Connor, A. P. Wilson, and W. P. Kussell, left Wellington yesterday on a trip to Sydney. Bisox and Benzora are unlikely visitors from the North Island to the Grand National Meeting. B. Eeed and T. Green were passenger* from Wellington for Sydney yesterday. Eeed, who was accompanied by his wife, contemplates being absent from the Dominion for approximately three months, and among his riding engagements will be Nightmarch, Gay Ballerina, and H. B. Lorigan's representatives. T. Green will be associated with Seatown and Honour in their public appearances, and as Seatown is due to contest the King's Cup, Green will make his way north to Brisbane. There is a possibility that Seatown will go on to Melbourne, in which event Green will accompany him. A. Hobson and G. Kidgway were also passengers on the same boat. A meeting of the committee of the Ashburton County Kacing Club was held yesterday, the president (Mr H. F. Nieoll) presiding. The New Zealand Racing Conference advised that the club's application to include two trotting events in its programme had been granted. The financial statement of the Winter Meeting showed a satisfactory profit. It was resolved that the programme for the Spring Meeting in September be the same as last year, and that the Grounds Committee meet the Trotting Club Ground Committee to discuss various improvements. TROTTING NOTES. The champion trotter of his day, Mr McElwyn, 1.59J, looks like being a big success as a aire, and a few days before the last mail left America two of his two-year-olds entered the 2.10 list, Pola McElwyn winning in 2.8 and Jessamine in 2.10. Jessamine is probably a very close relative to a colt by Mr McElwyn—Lallah Bookh Watts imported to New Zealand during the season by Messrs Kelly and Pirie, of Wellington. Both Lallah Eookh, dam of Jessamine, and Lallah Eookh Watts are by General Watts, 2.6}. An American paper of June ]9th reports the sale of Adioo Guy, 2.0}, to a New Zealand buyer, and the horse was to be shipped almost immediately after the last mail left. It is understood that he is to go to Southland. Adioo Guy is a pacer, and as such is not much in demand in America, but in New Zealand, where the pacer holds sway, he will be afforded plenty of opportunities. Jack Potts, who has not been seen in action for some time, is booked to make his appearance at Addington next month. The American pacer has not enjoyed the best of luck in his racing in the Dominion, but he is going along nicely now, and with Quality will be C. S. Donald's New Zealand Cup representative The field for the National Handicap +o be decided on the third day of the j New Zealand Metropolitan T.C. 's August Meeting is practically of New Zealand Cup quality. Of the eighteen nominated only Vesuvius and 'Glideaway are not eligible to start in the big November ractj, while horses that are missing from the nominations for this race include Logan Chief, Prince Pointer, Peter Bingen, Gold Jacket, and Peterwah. Prince Pointer has not been nominated for the Addington Meeting, and he will probably be given his first race of the 1929-30 season at Oamaru on Labour Day. He made his first appearance in Mr M. O'Brien's colours at that Meeting last year, and duly won the Weston Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, after which he went on to run fourth in the New Zealand Cup, and second in the Free-for-All. For some time past Prince Pointer has been in the care of Mr J. F. Poff at North Canterbury, but he is expected to join W. J. Tomkinson's string as soon as the August Meeting is over. The list of horses published yesterday in connexion with the New Zealand Sapling Stakes represented those left in after first forfeits had been declared.

HORSES FOR SYDNEY. (PBKBS ASSOCIATION TELBGBAH.) WELLINGTON, July 19. The Maheno for Sydney to-day took the following horses:—Nightmarch, Seatown, True Shaft, Sunkissed, Tea Queen, Dresden China, Eock Cake, Santa Anna, Open Cheque, and Teri. The jockeys Roy Eeed, T. Green, and G. Eidgway also went by the Maheno. SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C. ACCEPTANCES.
