As a result of this, the Public Works Department abandoned the task for some time. Cleanng is now be>"g attempted and vehicular traffic may be PObMb* within a week or by the end of next W The only means of access to MiHerton at present is by the coal hue fchich climbs the hill, at times with a grade of one in one. Several tunnels are encountered, one being about three hundred vards in length. rhese are ve-y dark, and unless use is made oi an* "electric torch there are collisions with the coal waggons every few yards. To add to the discomfort, the surface is extremelv greasy owing to the seepage of water and the oil from the trucks. This method of reaching the township cannot, of course, be used while the trucks are passing up and down the cable line, and thus traffic is possible only when the mines are not working. At present a track joins Stockton with Ngakawau. where the Stockton Company has its coal depot, and the isolation now felt has brought about an emphatic demand for the completion of this route as a vehicular road.
