Charges of theft of the sum of A 2 6s, the property of Richard Burrows, and driving a car without a license were preferred against Patrick MbA nelly, of Ashburton, at the Magistrate's Court, before Messrs w. H. Bundle and G. Kelly, J.P.'", yesterday. Mr L. A. Charles represented accused, who pleaded guilty to both charges. A collision occurred between a car driven by Mr C. C. Judge and one of the Power Board cars on West street yesterday morning. The former was driving out ot the Farmers' Co-op. As relation's yard and headed straight across tho street when he collided sideon with the other car. Both cars were damaged, but not extensively.# Record Frost. * The most severe frost experienced so far this winter was recorded yesterday morning, when 13 degrees were registered. The previous highest was 12 degrees, registered on Friday last. Daphne Lodge. At the meeting of the Daphne (Ret>ekah) Lodge on Wednesday evening N.G. Sister 8. Ellis presided. A motion of sympathy was passed With Bro. H. Blade in his bereavement. Three now members were elected. No Unemployed Subsidy. Tho Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) has advised the Mayor (Mr 11. tralbraith) that the Governnlent could not grant a subsidy for maintenance work to provide relief for unemployed. Methodist Circuit, The Ashburton Methodist Church Circuit held its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, when the Rev. R. B. Tinsley presided. It was reported that the membership was tho same as that of the last quarter. The balance-sheet showed m debit ualance of £4 4s 3d. Special collections were granted to the Foreign Mission Fund and the Baring square Bunday School. It was intimated that £4B had been raised by the Home Mission effort and &27 15s 4d by a retiring collection in aid of the Earthquake Keliei Fund. Votes of sympathy wete passed with the relatives of the late Mr T. J. Phaup and with Mr 8. Moore. An invitation was accepted by

the Rev. R. B. Tinsley to remain in the circuit for a fifth year. Technical School Board. At the monthly meeting of the Technical School Board held yesterday Mr B. Galbraith presided. The financial statement showed a credit of £434 14s 4d. The Education Department wrote approving the appointment of Miss H. Neville as a full-tim" assistant mistress at the school. The Assistant Director of Education wrote stating that the matter of compensation for Trevor Evans was before the Government. was decided to write to Messrs D. Jones and R. Burnett, M.P.'s, asking them to watch the matter on behalf of the Board. In reply to the Board's enquiry as to its position in the event of accidents to children at the school, the Education Department advised th .t there was no liability on the Board for accidents to children on the way to school, and that the Board could not undertake to insure children in or about the school. It was decided to send letters of sympathy to Miss E. 0. Aiken and Mr E. C. D. Withell, members of the staff, who are ill. j The matter of nrging that there be more representation .of trades and industries on Technical School Boards to conform with the general change in the educational system was left with Mr Thompson to place before the annual conference of the Technical Education Association. On the suggestion of Mr Hayes, it was agreed to take up the matter of insurance of school students with the conference. Messrs Houston and Lill were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month. The report of the Principal (Mr R. J. Thompson) stated that illness had affected the attendance, which was not more than 80 per cent, of the roll on some days. None of the farmers' classes in wool-clasrlng, bookkeeping, etc., had been started owing to so few entries being received. An open day for parents to inspect the work of the school would be held towards the end of the month. An instalment of £ll haa been paid to the Earthquake Relief Fund. The annual dinner to Borough and County Councillors would be held on August 2nd. Golf. ANAMA. At the distribution of the Sunday School prizes, the Rev. Mr Grigg presided over a large gathering. The following contributed items: Pianoforte solo, Mrs Kirkland; aongs: Mrs Kirkland, Madge Patterson, and Mr J. Howarth; duet, Jean and James Frost; recitations: A. Glassy, H. Mclvor, V. Mclvor, M. McIvor, frank McKtown, Linda Robertson; dialogue: Vera Mclvor and Linda Robertson, Misses M. and E. Mclvor, and Ron. Brown. Miss M. Harrison was accompanist. Mr Kirkland urged parents to give the Sunday School mi,r3 loyal support. Mr A. Painter thanked the people for their past support and interest in the Sunday Shoo] work, and for their patronage of the concert. Prizes were awarded to the following: linda Robertson, Jean Ivey, Frank McKeown, Gwen Ivey, Noeline Ivey. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. MAYFIELD. At the monthly meeting of the Mayfield Branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr J. Moore presided. Correspondence was received from the Railway Department, advising that the new ganger at Valetta station was willing to take over the telephone, and give the same service as formerly. The secretary of the Mid-Canterbury Executive wrote advising that the Technical School was holding classes for farmers. The Minister for Agriculture wrote that the present restrictions on the importation of stock would not be modified in any way. It was decided to give £5 5s to the Earthquake Relief Fund. A thanksgiving service for the King's recovery was held in St. Mary's on Sunday evening, when the service was taken by the Rev. A. J. Petrie, of Ashburton, who intimated that the new vicar appointed for this parish, the Rev. Morris Cox, of Kumara, would take up his duties on the first Sunday in October.
