FOOTBALL.

RUGBY. CANTERBURY UNION. OLD BOYS V. CHRISTCHURCH. To-morrow'a Ova! game at Lancaster Park should provide one of tho most struggles of the ees3oa. Old Eoys seem to have struck form and in epite of the absence of Dalley and Carleton in Australia, will field a, atrong side. Page, Hay, and In ties should r;o well as an inside back combination, and wi+h a fast three-quarter line :n support, will no doubt show to advantage. The Old Boya forwards are a lively set, who are jiist now in great nick. The Christchurch team have given a number cf good displays on the Oval, but aeem to havo Tailed on the south ground. They possess a splendid pads of heavy forwards who usually get more than their share of the ball. Manchester, Wiiders, and Rogers are three very useful members wbo are moeis consistent. With souiid performers as Mullan, Fulton, J. Ito'oilliard, and Hart, they should have little difficulty in fielding a formidable back line.

A clo®3 game should result in the clash between Linwood and Merivale on the south ground. On the west ground, Albion meet West Old Boys, while at the Show Grounds* 'Varsity are due to pli-y Sydenham. On the Show Grounds No. 2, Kaiapoi meet Christchurch in tho senior B competition, at Lancaster Park the curtain-raiser will be supplied by Old Boys and Training College (also eenior B grade}. A GOOD CONTEST. TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL BEATS ST. BEDE'S. (SPECIAL TO THE PBBSS.) TIMARU, July 11. After a fast, open game, Timaru Boys' High School defeated St. Bede's College, Christchurch, by 16 points to 8 at Fraser Park this afternoon. The weather was ideal, and there was a largo attendance of spectators. The game was of a high standard, the passing of the High School team being a feature of the play. Tha teams were evenly matched, but the slightly superior combination of the High School team proved effective. St. Bede's put up a good game, especially in the second half, but they could not reduce their opponents' lead.

Timaru kicked off ilrom the western end against a strong sun. They set up an attack, McAuliffe opening up from a scrum and passing to Manning, who was prompt.y tankled by O'Connor. An opening by the School backs resulted in Jones, who accepted a pass from Kobertson, scoring a great try at the corner. The kick failed. Timaru 3, St. Bede's 0. From a Bcrum, Timaru set up a nice passing rush, and things looked dangerous for St. Bede's, hut o'Sullivan cleared with a nice kick. A moment later the Sehool forwards again attacked. McAuliffe snapped up from a scrum, the ball going from Palmer to Manning, who outpaced Gaffaney and Devonport, and soored. The kick failed. Timaru 6, St. Bede's 0. St. Bede's reversed the situation, but school soon had play again in midfield. Ryan broke away, and looked like scoring for School, but he was well collared by Gonley. School continued to press, but a knock-on spoilt an opening. St. Bede's rallied with several loose forward rushes, and confined play to School's twenty-five. Devonport found touch five yards from the Timaru line. The ball came out to Gaffaney, who swerved cleverly, and threw a long pass to O'Sullivan, who crossed at the corner. Gaffaney's kick failed. Timaru 6, St. Bede's 3. Timaru returned to the attack. Manning secured in St. Bede's twenty-five and sent Ryan across the line. The referee, however, ruled the pass forward. From a scrum, McAuliffe secured, and passed to .Palmer, to Manning, who raced through' to the full-back and short punted. He beat O' Connor to the ball, and scored a spectacular try under the posts. Palmer converted. Timaru li, St. Bede's 3. On resuming after half-time, St. Bede's pressed vigorously, but the High School forwards set up a dribbling rush which gained them a lot of ;ground. A passing rush looked dangerous, but O'Sullivan secured possession aid transferred play to past halfway. A keen struggle ensued, but School asserted themselves. Play again came back to St. Bede's corner. A spell of fast, open play followed. Satterthwaite was injured, and was replaced by Tiz&rd- A- f%st forward attaelr by St. Bede's r<wulted 'in Br»y scrambling across. Gaffaney converted. Timaru 11, St. Bede's 8. Timaru made a hot attack, and confined play to St. Bede's twenty-five for some minutes,', bnt the defence was sound. St. Bede's gradually forced play into Schools' twenty-five, and the latter had some anxious minutes- The situation was relieved by a fre»-kick. 6t. Bede's came back with a rush, and School was hard put to it to prevent a score, but managed to clear. Driscoll gained a lot of ground for St. Bede's but School kicked out, and reversed the position with a fa3t. open attack. A stern tussle followed. From a-scrum in St. Bedels twenty-five the ban went out from Palmer to Manning and Robertson. The last-named scored a great try, which Palmer converted from well out. Timaru 16, St. Bedj's 8. School continued to attack hotl:\ and the visitors were hard pressed for the rtemainder of the game, which ended: Timaru 16. St. Bede's 8. WAIROA BEAT WAIKATO. (PRZSB ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) WAIROA, July 11. The Wairoa Sub-Cnion representatives defeated the touring Waikato team here this afternoon by 8 points to 6 after a strenuous forward contest. The game was played on a heavy ground, the local forwards winning the match. TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW. OLD BOYS' CLUB. Senior A v. Tomorrow, at Monica Park, in the first round of the Thacker Shield competition Hornby and Addington, who staged last Saturday the best jrame seeD this year, will do J battle again. This is purely due to the luck o£ tbe draw, and, with the recollection of last , Saturday's match stiH fresh, those who seek sparkling, open Rugby will be there in large number?. There thrilling clashes are proving a great draw this season, and to-morrow's should be an even more exciting tassle, as Hornby ;ire keen to avenge their defeat, whilst Addington are now right at the ton of their form. The issue is most uncertain, but the game should be hard and open, and productive of brilliant rushes by both sides. Hornbv specialise in the forwards, vrhile Addington's faith is rightly pinned on their brilliant backs, whose combination and speed throughout are a delight to the crowd. On the other ground Marist and Sydenham will be the attraction, and a fine, open game should result. The Greens ar»; expected to win. The Marist men will be led, it is stated, by their brilliant centre-three-quarter, G. H. Brittenden, who this season has been acting as referee.
