INQUEST CONTINUED.

The inquest into the circuitan£CS ; of the death of the late W. H. J.

Bowles was resumed before the Coroner, Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M., yesterday afternoon, and adjourned until this afternoon for the evidence of another witness. Mr Hi. S. J. Goodman appeared for W. J. Scott, proprietor of Scott's Garage, where Mr Bowles met with the accident which caused his death. Dr. P. S. Foster said that he was called to Scott's Garage, where he found Bowles lying in a pit. He nart a large wound at the back of the head, but appeared to have no other outward injury. Hie was taken to St. George s Hospital. He did not recover consciousness, but became steadily worse and died the following morning. His death was due to haemorrhage, fo lowing a fracture at the base of the skull. W J. Scott said that Mr Bowles garaged his car permanently in witness's garage. On the morning of July 3rd he brought his car in to have adjustments made. Bowles called in later and was standing in front of his car, examining it. The car had been brought out from over the pit and the workshop door was slightly open. Bowles suddenly stepped backwards through the door, overbalanced, threw his arms in the air, and disappeared. Witness, with the assistance of the garage men, laid Bowles flat on his back and called Dr. Foster and the ambulance. Bowles struck his head on the edge of the pit as he fell in. The pit was an ordinary garage pit and was covered, when not needed, by short lengths of wood. The doors of the workshop were generally shut except when a car was being run to or from the pit. Bowles was familiar with the workshop and garage and had actually been in th« nit himself to supervise the work on Sis car. There were No admission" notices at both ends of the garage. Owing to tho absence of a witness the inquest was adjourned until this afternoon at 2.15 o'clock.
