SONG RECITAL.
MISS MARIAN WOODHOUSE. At the Jellicoe Hall last night the recital of Miss Marian Woodhouse and her students confirmed again the laudatory comments so often made in previous reports; her methods of developing the voices and their mode of interpretation proving again their teacher's skill and taste. Satisfaction should also be expreswd at the choice of songs which bear the names of many masters of the crafts; programmes of equal merit are rare our singing world. Miss Woodhouse took herself a prominent share, introducing from Bantock's "Sappho" the stately _ and impressive "Hymn to Aphrodite," wherein, by the way, her golden chariot is drawn by those most anpoetical of birds, the sparrows. The hymn, formidably difficult from traversing key after key in modern fashion, was given by Miss Woodhouse with breadth of tone and striking effect. Later on she turned to old Italian music, singing an aria by Cesti very finely and responding to the encore with "Bright the Ring of Words." A series of glees were well rehearsed, eood in harmony and bright in tone, Marchetti's "Avie Maria" and Barnbv's "Sweet and Low" particularly charming. On the side of the student soloists. Miss Madeline Jennings sang the "Sapphic Ode," and Chopin's lovely 'Lithuanian Song" with warm feeling, th: firstnamed, however, requiring more volume. Miss Belle Renaul's voice came out very well and sounded to great advantage in the Schumann encore. At first rather nervous, Mrs R. H. Henley soon recovered and gave much satisfaction, especially in ner second. A telling voice and plenty of spirit distinguished Miss Maggie Richardson's excellent contributions, and Miss Hazel Richard's pretty soprano was warmly appreciated. Miss Lilian Church was very happy with Schubert s "Wild Rose." Miss Aileen Warren at the piano was a tower of strength to soloist* and glee singers alike. A large audienoe followed the performances sympathetically.
