"ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT."
TO THIS EDITOR OP THE .V-RESS.
Sir,—l notice that you have not in Christchureh committed the paradoxical foolish noes of banning Remarque's "All Quiet on tho Western Front." As you well know it has been banned from thw Auckland Library. Yet in the jroading-rooni in the newspapers one can read literally scores of articles telling practically nil one need to know about the book. These articles can be read by young and old alike, and each „ one can therefore form a mind picture as to the matter contained Regarding ■■angr own opinion of Remarque's work, I may s*y that I look upon it as being in the nature of a major surgical operation. It may be nasty, it may be horrible, ■rank, and oven atrocious, but I am certain it is most necessary for the world, in order to remove from the human mind the cancerous idea that war of anv kind is a sort of selfrighteous holy crusade. By that I mean that to remove an evil you must fat of all expose that evil in frank and courageous truth.—Yours, etc., R. M. THOMSON, Main Body, N.Z.E.F. Auckland, July 4th, 1929.
