Ainsworth. It wan decided to grant £lO to the local kranch of the l'lunket Society. The l'lunket Society offered to lease the building now occupied by Mr Taylor for a term of years, provided tho Council would sarry out certain alterations. It «as decided that the Works Committee draw up a report on the matter. Tho Waimairi County Council wrote offering to pay aOs per annum as ita share of a Street light at the corner of Britannia street •nd Beach road. It was stated that tho County Council was •ntitled to pay half the cost of the erection •f the light, which would be £5 16s. I was decided to point this out, and to request the County Council to pay half the cost of erecting the lamp. The Mayor and Crs. F. T). Muirson and ©. W. Bishop were appointed to meet repre•entativoa of the IJeathcoto County Council regarding running a water main along Page's toad.

With reference to tho conference between the Council and Mr H. F. Toogood regarding the proposed Avon River bridge, the Standing Committee suhmittod a report that after llr Toogood had outlined proposals for conr trusting a bridge with a parabolic arch, it was rcfiolved that Mr Toogood be instructed to prepare the necessary plans and specifications, and to apply to the Marine Department for a warrant to proceed with the »ork.

The report was adopted. At a special meeting of the Standing Committee to enquire into matters concerning the Mew Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade, it was decided that the Brigade be reorganised and that fresh applications for the position be invited.

The report of tlio Works Committee stated thas a letter had been received from Mr F. IjttjijjtKMii, representative of No. 10 Highways Council, intimating that the Main Highways Board would not subsidise the cost of eliminating the cross fall on the shoulders of jPsjre's road. The Board agreed that tenders be invited for Portland cement concrete, and would subsidise this bs well as the cost of ••sling the portions of paving which could aot now be carried out. The Board considered that the provision of two 10ft strips of pavement amply covered its obligations. The Board was prepared to allow the borough two years to pay its quota. It would be necessary to apply to the Minister for i'raance. for a consenting Order-in-Council to •btain the advance from the Board. It was decided to accept the conditions, •nd to advise the Heathcote County Council •f the Borough Council's decision. The Christchurch Tramway Board wrote agreeing to the financing of its share of the tost of tne proposed Avon bridge as provided by Section IT of the Local Legislation Act, 1927, stating that it would be necessary for • loan to be raised in a special rating area to provide the amount. On the motion of Cr. Muirson, seconded by Cr. Ainsworth, it was resolved that the Tramway Board he asked to advise the Council •f intended boundaries of the proposed special rating area, and also protesting against being included in that special ratng area, as the amount, £ISOO, would be credited to the City Council's quota, and the City Council *»d agreed to pay the whole of tho extra test of raising tho proposed bridge from 4ft •in to 6ft 6in.

Wise, to one of the representatives of Page Bros., contractors for Page's road subdivision. Mr Page attended to protest against certain demands made by the new Council. He said the work had all been done according to a plan which had been passed by the old Council. The question at issue was whether the Council should giant a clearance and take over the subdivision or insist on certain by-laws being complied with. The Council decided to inspect the work. The following rates are proposed for the Ricearton Borough for the ensuing year:— General rate of 31d in the £ on the unimproved value (fire prevention and street lighting included) ; a hospital rate of Id in the X on the unimproved value; drainage rates of 11-32 d. l-16d. and 1 17-64 d on the capital value; Domains' rate of l-16d in the £ on the unimproved value; Waimakariri River Trust rate of 1-lld in the £ on the capital value; sanitation charge of £1 9s 6d The City Surveyor advised that the Wigram Aerodrome would be able to complete the aerial survey of the borough shortly. The letter asked whether the borough proposed to prepare the maps required under the Town Planning Act, and if so, whether th« City Council is to be asked to do the work on the borough's bfshalf.
