OBITUARY.

MR PHILLIP ARNST. Mr Phillip Arnst, who passed away on July 4th, at 24 St. John's street, was in his 83rd year. The late Mr Arnst had been in failing health for some time. He had resided in Papanui for many years, and was loved and respected by all who knew him. The interment took place at the Waimairi Cemetery on Saturday, July 6th, the Rev. A. Peters officiating at the service in the house and at the graveside. The esteem in which the late Mr Arnst was held was shown by the large gathering of relatives and friends who attended his funeral. DR. GEORGE W. COLE. Private advice was received from Auckland yesterday of the death of Dr. George W. Cole, who practised in Gisborne for many years, and for some time had been living in retirement in Auckland.

The late Dr. Cole, who attained the advanced age of 82 years, had been resident in the Dominion for over 50 years. He came out to New Zealand as a young doctor at the age of 27 years, and was asked to settle in Dunedin, where he held the position of medical officer of health for Dunodin. Subsequently he proceeded to Wellington, where he was appointed visiting physician to the Wellington HospitaL Dr. Colo then moved to Gisborne, where he was in. practice for about 20 years, his home being located on what is now the site of the J.D.R. store, in Gladstone road. He was, a successful practitioner, and was deeply respected throughout the community. He disposed of his practice to Dr. W. Reeves, but afterwards circumstances necessitated his resuming practice. The family later moved to Auckland, where Dr. Cole continued to practise for some years. He was the author of several books, including "Contribution of Public Health." Many of the earlier residents of the district will regret to hear of his demise, and every sympathy will be extended to the bereaved widow and family, which comprises Mrs F. Piesse, Christchtirch, and Messrs Howard, Henry, and Phillip jOole, of Auckland.

MR C. T. DUDLEY. Mr Charles Thornton Dudley, only surviving son of the late Archdeacon B. W. Dudley, died at Nelson yesterday in his 87th year. He was one of the original scholars of Christ's College and one of the oldest surviving Old Boys. Mr Dudley first went to Christ's College when it was established at Lyttelton in 1851, and then joined the school in Christchurch again in 1853, walking over the hill from Lyttelton with his brother. He was 21st on the school list of Christ's College, where he stayed till 1860. After leaving school he began farming in Canterbury, finally settling in the Nelson district about twenty years ago. A son, A. W. Dudley, was killed at Pretoria in 1901, in the South African War. His son-in-law, the) Rev. _A. H. Norris, leaves for Nelson this morning to attend the funeral. DR. P. MACKIN.
