OPEN VERDICT.

PAPANUI ROAD FATAL accident. CAR DRIVER'S IDENTITY NOT ASCERTAINED. A verdict that death was duo to laceration of the brain following on a fracture of the base of the skull, sustained through being knocked down by « motor-car driven by some person or persona unknown was returned by the Coroner, Mr E. C. Levvey, yesterday at the conclusion ot the inquest into the death of .John \\ il-on Nu holis. who d.ed in the Hospital on June -3rd after an accident 111 Papanui road. Mr K. M. Glesson Appeared tor the relatives of the deceased, and Mr C. IS. Thomas watched the interests o; tne driver of a car which was in that part of Papanui road in which the accident occurred at the time of the mishap. Sergeant Macnaniara represented the Polite. ■ • Ham Hollobon, a shepherd employed at the Belfast Freezing Works, residing at 34 Creyke road, Fendalton, said that on June 10th he was riding a motor-cvele in Papanui road at about 6.30 p.m. When he reached Mays road he found that an accident had occurred, and in consequence he was asked by the motorman to get the number of the second car going up Papanui road. There were two ears going north and witness followed them to Perry street. Here one car turned into the side-street, which one he could not say. He did not get the number of this car and could not describe it. After the car had turned down Perry street he fo'lowed the other car, catching it up at the Papanui Church. Witness did not str the car, but took the number (] 18-771), returning then to May's road, giving the motorman the number of the carWitness could not say if the second car he followed was the one pointed out to him by the motorman as it wae a dirty night. No other car came in between the two cars, the only ones going north at the time. The second j car was the one pointed out to witness, but they were some distance away tefore he turned round to cha«e them. To Mr Thomas: Witness did not know which of the two cars went down the side road. The Coroner then returned the verdict mentioned above.
