INFANT MORTALITY.
LOWEST RATE ON RECORD. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELE&RAV.; WELLINGTON, June 11. Infant mortality statistics show that the total number of deaths under one year has dropped from 1080 in 1927 to 984 last year, or nearly 9 per cent. The rate per thousand live births ten from 38.74 in 1927 to 36.18 last year. This is considered a phenomenally on level, and has never before been reached in any country". An examination of figures shows tnat far more infant males die early than females. Of the 984, bO9 uere males, and while this number was within one of the 1927 total females dropped S». The difference, therefore, was more than ever accentuated last The reduction in loss of life is principals in children over one monui. The nearer the date of birth the greater is the mortality, and evidently there is always a proportion of ints who hare little or no chance of living. Of the 984 deaths, 657 were due to '"congenital malformations' nis•'ases peculiar to early infancy. a these are all of antenatal origin presumably not preventive, or only to small extent.
