Superlative golf marked the Moortown tournament, which was continued in midsummer weather. The tit-bit was the Duncan-Hagen encounter, the former winning dramatically on the last green A'ith an amazing curly put past Hagen's ball, which to most golfers would have been an impossible stymie. Hagen amusingly declared: "It-was a drive, not a put, that beat me." The newspapers emphasise the fact that Hagen has never beaten Duncan in match play. George Duncan took 3o out and 3o home and Hagen 34 and 36. The exclusion of Hagen means that the British player is bound to reach the final, as the remaining Americans are all in the other half of the draw.
Archie Cornpston only beat Boomer on the twenty-first hole, though he was two up at the fourteenth. Aubrey Boomer eventually lost by missing a two yard put. J.
