The comparatively mild weather experienced during the week has encouraged fishing enthusiasts who, for the past few nights, have been able to pursue their sport in the lagoon near the pier >yitiiout suffering discomfort from th# fcold. The catches, however, have been poor, the general .coajplaint being; that fishing from the pier has been ruined since the formation of the pool, and that there is so much tsed in the pool itself that the fish there refuse anything on the end of a line. It is a very tantalising sight for the patient fisherman, to see right under them a large cod come slowly to the surface and then slowly disappear again. For the most part thev have to be content witjh hooking herring*, but occasionally a red cod is landed-

Shifting Sand. For many months now residents have become accustomed to seeing a very large drop from the footpath of the .Clifton on to the rock-strewn beach b.eiow, but a change in these conditions now appear* to be taking place. At tbe Clifton eui of the Esplanade ean4 is a g ain banking up against *fce stone wall. At its highest ppjnt it ie up to the tbjr4 step of the projections which give access to the beach, and from there gradually diminishes wntil halfway along towards the pier tearooms it reaches the level of the roeky foundations of the beach. So great have been the changes in this vicinity of late, that it is to know whether this building UP process will continue, but a return to the former conditions pf this email strip of beach would eertaialy be very welcome.
