ARAPUNI DAM.
"PERFECTLY SAFE" (nui 'isaocurio* t*lsob*ji.) HAMILTON, February It Mr T. Rabone, Chief Public Worka Engineer at Arapuni, when interviewed, estimated that the first supply of power from the hydro-electric work® would be available in about Jane, the amount being 15,000 kilowatt*. Further supplies would probably be available in September and December or January. Mr Babone gave aa assurance that the dam wai perfectly safe. The ground would bear a pressure of 70 to 100 tons to the square foot, while the present greatest pressure was only eight tons. Comparing conditions with the St. Francis dam in California, he said that the cOilapae of that dam was due to the disintegrating of the hard pan on which the dam was constructed, resulting from water action on ground previously dry, bot there was no such possibility at Arapuni.
